I retired at 59 and never looked back - Work is over rated. I like walleye, but I have to give the nod to wild brookies for best eating. I realize I am a member of a small minority, but if you are lucky enough to be feasting on either fish you are in a good place.

Growing up my folks had a place in northern MI with a creek fed pond. The only fish in that pond were native brook trout. Growing up it was over fished and we tended to catch brookies mostly in the 7" to 11" range. As time passed the frequent fishermen passed on and I lived near enough to make it there in early May when the water temps were just right. Then the norm was 12" with many 15" to 18".

It was also a great spot for Pat (grouse) hunting.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Chicago,

I have to agree with you, Native Brookies are some of the finest eating a man can do, great with a fine steak.

all the Best

[quote="IDcut"] I've never caught, nor have I eaten walleye, but everyone from the midwest I've talked to have told me walleye is the best! I don't doubt them, having never eaten any, but I can't imagine it's much better than crappie!

Walleye is my favorite warm water fish to eat but crappie runs a VERY close second place.

What else am I doing? Other than work? Well for fun, I do more work. That's what I get for having a farm, dogs, waaaay too many horses for my own good, and private grouse forest land "up nort" that needs managing. Although I've been limiting trips to my land in the UP because it costs around $300 in diesel fuel up and back these days...

nj gap,

I know what you mean, have not been up to the log cabin in Potter/Tioga, Pa all summer, 1st time I can ever remember actually factoring in the fuel cost for traveling back and forth.

all the best,

skeettx: Yep, straight 6 flat, 3 on the tree, 6-volt system, archaic brakes, and tons of work left to do. It wouldn't be my 1st choice but...

Not sure where he got his taste for odd, old iron?

Well, work has required I give it 60 hours a week since late April and that doesn’t look to be changing at least through mid August. Would be great if I wasn’t salaried.

I still get some trap in once a weekend. Considering prices that’s probably a blessing in disguise.

Did I mention I’ve had a relapsing illness since April too?

Crab pots in the River, boat was functional enough for the task.

Shot a round of sporting clays this am, first time this year.
