Last year in South Dakota, I couldn't hunt the game production areas because I couldn't find any non-toxic shells and the 16 ga SXS's I had with me were not steel proofed. I recently came up with a case each of Heavishot 1 1/4 oz loads #6's and #4's. Are these loads safe to shoot in guns not steel proofed? I do have a couple of steel proofed 16 ga SXS's, but they are on the heavy side and are not the guns I normally take on my hunting trips. I would really prefer bismuth but have not found any yet. |

If you look at all the data for Hevi-shot they use slow burning powder with steel shot wads and sometimes buffer.
Probably not a top notch idea. |

Rex, get with me as I have a bunch of the Kent Bismuth 16ga loads. I can easily spare a few ten round boxes. |

If I remember right, Hevishot is harder than steel and choke strain is very high. |

There are a few types of shot under the brand name of Hevi-Shot. I'm not sure of the present availability but the ones marked Hevi-Shot Classic are the only ones safe for lead only barrels. |

Yes, there is some hevi shot safe for old barrels, and are slow.
The other hevi shot are crap. Absolute crap. Wad doesnt open up very quickly if at all, so shooting big slug at birds.
Bismuth is the way to go in those old barrels. |
