September 15th... It was too-cool this morning to sit on my deck and drink coffee. I could have worn a light coat, I suppose, but it felt very different. The heat of Summer is finally dissipating here. In the open-space across from the house, the "native" grasses (i.e. weeds) are turning from greens to browns and greys, with umbers and yellows along the way. A small flock of turkeys has been haunting the corner of that field (& my yard) since late July and they were out this morning very early, with the poults of the year getting bigger every time I see them, to the point where the mother hen is only a bit bigger than the rest. Fall is officially here IMHO.

In about a week I'll be packing up guns and ammo (& everything else) for a trip "Up Nort". Flying into Minneapolis and meeting some folks for the then long-drive to the lake house. The flooding has finally receded below the banks of the bay, but 4-months of soaking has taken it's toll on innumerable things, in both the house and the outbuildings. The vehicles were moved to higher ground so they should be fine, but the power to the house is limited to only 110 volts, meaning that a leg is down somewhere in the system. The culprit is likely the buried line between the power pole and the panel, but we won't know until somebody competent has checked everything out. Until then, no hot water and no heat. Late September on the Canadian border without either won't be much fun. For some reason, even the gas stove is acting up(!). I'm not sure what is worse, floods or fires?

The goal this year will be to stabilize the property (power, heat, sewage, & water), haul off the ruined equipment from the cleaning house, the boat/bunk house and the snowmobile/mower shed. If (big if) we can get things prepped for the inevitable long & cold winter up there, then maybe we can chase a bird or two or even catch a fish. Right at the moment... it sounds more like work than fun to me. I didn't even buy a return trip ticket because of all the unknowns. I sure hope the weather cooperates...

Fantastic Grouse, we had one under our picnic table a few years back would come up on the porch every so often, but he never let us get as close to him as the Grouse in your picture, absolutely incredible. Hope no predator bother him.
