I recently took possession of a pre-64 M-12 16 gauge standard grade, with a modified choke. It looks like it might be original finish on wood; possibly re-blued. The serials on the receiver and receiver extension are as follows: R237 on the receiver, and just 237 on the extension. Obviously not a 1912 gun even though it has a 14 ring pump handle/forearm, as the barrel stamping IDes the gun as a M-12 and not 1912.

Would the letter R refer to "replacement"? Could it be a parts clean up gun? The stock seems to be about a 1/8 or even a 1/4" short of standard length, but it does not look cut down as the plastic butt plate looks 100% tight and original looking.

Very confused on the beautiful 16 gauge! Would greatly appreciate any help.

I don't have an answer for you about the model 12, but welcome to the site!

I seem to recall that for a period in the 30's-40's some receiver were marked with a "W" which indicated a factory reblue due to a bad batch, having been scratched in process, etc. Perhaps this "R" represents something similar.
