Well folks, the Himalayan monster bird just keeps calling me, so I went back to Nevada again. Climbing "the peak" during winter conditions proved darn near impossible. I failed my first attempt then found an icy mountain goat trail up a narrow spine while chukar hunting the next day...so up I went. Eventually, even the goat trail came to an end and we were on our own, but above the zone with 4+ feet of snow.
The snowcock have moved out of there to winter elsewhere: only one bird remained behind and I never quite caught up to the devil (Rusty had scent and the tracks were fresh). I think I've figured out where they winter though and may go back for the closer, but that is "iffy".
No Himalayan giant this time. However the chukar hunting was lonely and wonderful, serving as reward for seven straight days of leg torture, but I will save that for later. Suffice to say, there were a lot of chukar dinners. For now, let's take a hike up into the high Ruby Mountains:

Garhart,
Great pictures for sure, in my mid 70's now and after my open heart surgery, there is no way for me to join you hunting HC except to enjoy the great pictures. Further you know better than to stick a good gun in the snow like that, just joking buddy. Hope all is well in your neck of the mountains. Keep a close eye on Rusty now in the big mountains, at his age anything can happen.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Smart a** young whipper snapper.
Beautiful country Garhart. Love the pics.
I can hunt on flat ground just as far as you care to walk, but that mountain stuff is a much different experience and I have never exerted myself at any altitude above 3,500 ft. The highest altitude I have ever hiked was 6,200 at Mt. Washington and that wasn't a real hike, more like meandering around and looking at the sights.
I would need to do some real work, before I could take on the country in your pics and honestly, my working out days are over. LOL Been there, done that even got an effing T-shirt around here someplace!!
I'll stick to the prairie chasing huns, sharpies and phez!!
You keep taking pictures and the rest of us will enjoy them!! |

Fantastic! I love seeing Rusty up in the mountains. Makes my day.
A friend just got back from the Himalayas on a sheep hunt. Said a few days the snow cocks were all over. Committed to bringing a shotgun next time he goes. Lol. |

I went back. Ski program didn't work out: ice above 8,000'. Snowshoes with crampons didn't work out well either, but almost made it. We turned around in 60 mph winds and single digit temps. about 1/2 mile short of our destination. I don't want to know what the wind chill was, but Rusty was digging into snow banks to escape each time we stopped for a breather and the wind was blasting snow along the top like Everest. When you worry about the dog dying, it's time to go back down the mountain where the chukars live...lots and lots of chukars. Hooray for chukars! Eventually, snowdrifts at the bottom of the mountains even got deep and I came home.

WyoChukar, you are an animal!! -- A very wise and sophisticated one. I live vicariously on your stories and photos -- love 'em!
Rusty is an animal, too, of course. What a dog. How old? Got another anything like that in reserve? |
