when I had my Britt , the last time we Pheas hunted was at our local GC . She was 16 and at the end of the road , but she wanted to go . Stayed around one smaller field , heavy brush , small woods with a good sized pile up of brush for the skeet field clearing . She pointed a bird , but it got up a little far , couldn't say if I hit it or not . It went around a corner of the pile up , out of sight . Took a walk over and she just acted strange . Finally she ran out of gas , van was parked right there and carried her over . She layed in the van for a bit , then suddenly got up and crawled over to the junk again . Still nothing positive - carried her back to the van . She repeated this again. This time , she found the correct hole , plunked down by it and as I crawled in , spotted the tip of the birds' tail . Grabbed in as far as I could and got the legs and butt , and yanked it out - talk about getting clawed up . Snapped the birds neck , gave it to her . She gave it a little nip , then just put her head down on it and fell asleep ! Enough !! She passed soon after . Just would not give up ! (Irish Britt !!??)

16gaugeDavis,

The reason I hunt is because of my dogs and watching them work, your old girl more than did her job as a companion hunting partner, she provided you with memories that will last a life time. I am in my mid 70's now and still watching my dogs work in the Grouse woods and pheasant fields, I have a 10 year old Ryman Setter named Heston, who is pretty much retired, and still puts on a show. He loves our place in Potter/Tioga, Pa where we have Grouse in our front yard. He will probably do his last hunt on our own forest property.

Thanks for the story I really liked it.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave
