Checking to see if anyone has tried this in 7/8 or 1 oz 16 ga loads.
Thanks in advance. |

BPI in their Advantages 10th Edition have some recipes for Allianz 20/28
Mostly for Cheddite and Fiochi hulls and SG16 and BP Z16 wads.
Pressure generally are above 8000 PSI with most being above 9.5k |

Thanks I saw those. With powder tough to find I am looking for some powder to use with Cheddite & the SG16 & pink claybuster wads. I just picked up a reloader & the guy gave me about 2000 of these wads.
I will add that all my guns are recently made guns. No older guns. |

What manuals would anyone recommend for good load data? |

Alliant and Hodgdon, but neither has 20/28 for the 16 gauge.
Even on the spreadsheets there isn't much data for 20/28. |

Grafs lists 20/28 adjacent to Unique in their powder speed chart, so you might start there with some mild 7/8 oz loads. Plenty of Unique data out there.

I have this load in my files, but it uses the hard to find DR16 wad.
Herters/cheddite 2 3/4' hull
20/28 17.3 gr
DR16 wad Ched 209 primer
1182fps @ 7420 psi
Tested by T Armbrust
I was going to drop the powder a bit and try it in a 2 1/2" hull and 3/4 oz.
Agree it would be nice to find one using Claybuster wads or SG 16. |

I have not tried 20/28.
For 7/8 oz I have used Titewad & Universal fairly successfully with the SG16 wad, but I like 1350-ish fps. Universal will be hard to find, but there should be some Titewad out there. I used popcorn on top of the shot for those loads to get a good crimp, but would probably use airsoft pellets today, or a cork wad under the shot.
In 1 oz & above I tend to use Longshot with the SG16, and that should be easy to find.
More recently, in 3/4 oz I have been using Clays (hard to find), Clay Dot (somewhat easier) & Green Dot (fairly easy). I recently Chrony tested Clay Dot in the SG16 & CB078. The CB078 was about 60 fps slower for the same powder charge, and I needed a 28ga nitro card to get a good crimp. I use a 1/4" cork wad in the SG16 with some airsoft pellets on top for a good crimp. |

what Brewster and 3Dogs said ...it loads about the same grainage as Unique , but what 3B alluded to - it is quite a bit denser than Unique . That's why the DR is such a help . The powder itself burns great and is robust . |

That's the load I had tested by Armbrust several years ago. Works fine in the old (purple) Herters hulls. I've been experimenting with the new Herters hulls, which are just a bit shorter. Not enough room in the new hulls for that load. So I tried reducing the powder charge by one bushing. Just about a grain less. They load pretty well. Shot a box yesterday, didn't have any bloopers. But it was also above 40 degrees. I'll try them on a day when it's maybe 20 degrees colder and see how they do. |

3birddogs-I assume the Armbust load you mention is 7/8 oz? |

Alliant says 20/28 produces the same pressure as Unique by charge weight. It was formulated to be more dense because when Winchester went to HS hulls in the 28 gauge, they were shorter and the normal charge of 13 grains of Unique took up too much room. Any 16 gauge recipe for Unique can use the same charge by weight of 20/28. Stack height will not be the same. |
