I got the WSF powder yesterday so this morning I did some experimenting. The little data I'd found on the web and the old Yahoo site sheets led me to believe that 22 gr with 1 oz shot would work well for the straight wall cases. I loaded one old Herters Cheddite hull each with SG-16, Z-16 and the pink CB0078-16 with the powder cup flared to help fend off powder migration. The SG-16 yielded a bit more dished crimp than I'd like, the Z-16 WAY more dish, but the CB0078 was pretty good. Shells were loaded with my Mec Sizemaster.
I ran each of them over my Competition Electronics ProChrono. It was heavily overcast getting ready to rain and I didn't use the skyscreens on the chronograph. Roughly 3 feet muzzle to chrono
All used CCI 209 Primers.
The SG-16 load gave 1228 fps
Z-16 1263
CB0078-16 1277

Then I dropped bushing size to 20.6 gr WSF and loaded 3 with the CB0078-16.
Ave 1215, with ES of 10
I'm going to need to load a few with the flared cup CB0078 and do some shaking of them to see if powder migration will be a problem.
This stack height issue with published loads is a real issue with the 16 ga. It's still my favorite though.

Thanks! Going to try loading some WSF I have with 1 oz loads. Looking at your load with the cb wad is promising. that is about the velocity I want.

also bought some wsf to replace universal, using rem game load hulls, claybuster 1 oz wads and 18.9 grs of wsf gives me about 1150 fps, using it for trap, its dirtier then universal but gets the job done

It should go w/o saying but i'll say it anyway. With the current powder shortages i'm open to sometimes experimenting with different powders. I never have used WSF before, and like yous have obtained some because it was available and i have access to alot of data. I don't like the fact that the data in some cases, from supposedly reputable publications, are still using what some say is the wrong wad for the hull with migration or stack issues. I know of guys who use an over powder card to deal with migration issues and some still use rice, cheerios, beans popcorn pips etc to get better stack heights. Many say one shouldn't have to do that; find a load that works. Easier said than done sometimes, especially for a newbie and dealing with component issues.

Kennedy.. where did you find that data ? Are you using that in a Rem black shortie ?
Did you chrono it & its a concave load, correct?

I am using it in a regular black game load hull, I used a chrony to first measure my universal load 17,4 grs then starting with the same grs of wsf worked up until I got the same fps. my crimps look the same, real close to factory crimp

A bit more experimenting. I had some new, primed Fiocchi cases that I tried with the CB0078 pink wad, 1 oz Eagle #8, and 21 gr WSF. I wasn't real happy with the amount of dish in the crimp so I called my wife who was in town and asked her to bring home some dry beans for filler. I asked for something the size of black eyed peas but she got lentils. 6 of them fit nicely around the center post in the pink wad and crimped a lot better. Still a slight dish but not bad. Doubt they would weigh enough to change pressure considerably.
Patterns were pretty good, especially the one with 1 oz Lawrence Magnum 7 1/2. Used my Dickinson Estate SxS with the IC choke at 25 yards. 3 shots over the ProChrono went 1206, 1203 and 1233. Thinking that as fine grained and dense as WSF is an extra bump on the loader might vary the charge rate.

I have been using WSF in 1 oz. 16b loads for many years in my Fox 16. Load is:

20 grns WSF
Win209 primer
WAA16 hull
WAA16 wad

I've killed a lot of game and countless clay targets. It just works.

I have recently tried WSF in cheddite (once fired herters) hulls with SG-16 wads and 1 1/16th ounce of shot. 21.5 grains of powder with this combination gives me consistent velocities of 1260-1270 fps range and excellent patterns and near perfect crimps. The field commander (Z-16) wad gave slightly dished crimps but a .125” 28ga. card wad in the bottom of shot cup fixed the crimps. Velocities were slightly less (1240-1250 range) with this wad and patterns were good. Cheddite 1632 wads with WSF and 1 1/8th ounce of shot did not pattern particularly well regardless of powder charge weight used.

*used win primers for all loads above

I have two sources/attributions:

Lyman's 4th edition: 1223 fps/ 9700LUP
Winchester Western:1165 fps/ 8400 PSI

I've been using this load in my Fox 16 for many years.
