So Dave...do the local womenfolk spit when they hear your name (at least the local hunting-widows during Autumn)? Having Pine Creek (& Slate Run) nearby could exacerbate that problem to being even-more than just a Fall distraction. Shotguns & flyrods and then over multiple seasons of the year...oh my!
As to the older Smith guns Skeettx, I clearly like em too...

Had to peddle a few old fly rods and reels to justify these "extravagances" (Grangers, Edwards, Pfluegers, etc.). Since all my local trout streams here have been overrun by Californians, I won't miss them much. I have others (and the guns are more fun anyway). |

Ll0yd3,
As I have grown older the problems have become a lot less, only a few of the younger wives are disgruntled with us older Grouse hunting mentors, and it seems the girls are getting use to having the nice Ryman and Small Munsterlander dogs in their homes.
I do still get blamed when a young Grouse hunter purchases a Classic bird gun however. No big deal I have become use to it, pretty much. Got to keep passing on the Upland Shooting Life affliction to the younger generations!
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave
L.C. Smith Man
I especially like it when I get to talk with some of the young ladies who have become avid Grouse hunters. Computers are good for some things anyway.
Talking with this young lady as she started her Grouse hunting, it was a real pleasure.

Looking a bit androgenous in that camo but w/two birds and a side by side(!) I guess she's doing allright. Good job Dave! |

Lloyd3,
The young Grouse hunter in the picture did her 1st grouse hunting with another mentor and did great Grouse hunting for the 1st time. A young lady who guns 2 Grouse on her 1st outing, has got her act together. Love the fact she used her Grandfathers SXS double gun taking the Grouse. Few beginners accomplished what she did, I do know she has purchased another good CG gun to continue shooting.
The young lady is making some very good decisions for a new Grouse hunter/shooter!
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Quality 1 and Quality 2 guns respectively, 1891 and 1890. And, while both are from Fulton, the earlier gun was built with entirely Syracuse-sourced parts. |

Making sense of these guns is a chore. This book helps...

The older guns are fairly easy (if you ignore hammer guns and the 3-barrel guns), as there just weren't that many made (largely handmade production & simple processes limited the output). Hammerless gun production at Syracuse was from 1886 to 1888-9 and only around 1,000 guns were produced. This Syracuse-style of gun manufacturing (& models) continued when production resumed at Fulton, N.Y. in 1890, and another 595 guns of this type were produced there (Houchins, pg.99).
After the Hunter Brothers really got going (by 1892-3), new designs and new grades were unveiled and the numbers (& variety of guns) ramped-up. Mr. Stubbendieck's latest tome really helps with all that. |

Lloyd3,
Yes sir I have the Stubbendiek Production records book also and with my Grandfathers document records notes containing a lot of the Special Order SN numbers, I have a pretty good look at most of the guns made by Hunter Arms down thru the years.
The missing pages that Bill Brophy was unable to retrieve still leave some gaps as to some of the guns made, and the executive type guns, only the owners retain the documents. We do own a few of those guns also. Including a Special made Quality 2, 20 gauge gun, that the SN was then duplicated on much later. The book that has gotten harder to purchase is the Plans & Specifications of the L.C. Smith Shotgun, by Brophy, it gives every L.C. Smith part used by number, and most all the engineering drawings of those parts, to build the L.C. Smith guns. Very good book for an engineer, like myself.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave
L.C. Smith Man
L.C. Smith Q2, Special made pre production 20 gauge made for my Great Grandfathers Woodcock & Quail hunting. Gun Sleeved by Briley for 28 gauge long ago.

In the FWIW column, I ran into a pre-1898 16-gauge F-Grade Elsie hammergun down in Colorado Springs last Wednesday (I go to Sheels and Bass Pro in C. Springs to buy my shotgun ammo anymore (no "ghetto-action" on the way to the stores there). It was noticeably lighter than my 12-gage guns. Condition wasn't wonderful (but but possibly savable) and it's price reflected that. Any interest here? |

Whittington was a blast! A thankyou to Skeettex for the handguards and the good conversations. The Texas (& New Mexico) contingents were wonderful, as always. |

The Whittington was a blast again this year! Even managed to shoot the last round on the Multi Target event with the other Byron that was there! Enjoyed meeting skeetx for the first time after chatting with him for years. |
