Looking at a LC Smith FW S three digit serial number 16 ga gun. Not sure of manufacture year date. Appreciate any info. Thanks Jim |

You need to be a bit more clear here.
FWS preceding the numbers means from 1946 to 1950.
FW in a Smith's description by itself usually means "featherweight" w/two screws in the sideplate.
FWM preceding the numbers means "Marlin", from 1968 to 1971. |

It is marked FWS XX9 so i believe it is a very early year in the 1946-1950 series. I have a 12 ga that was built in 1948-1949. I once had a link to LC Smith serial number /date info but the link no longer works. Thanks Jim |

Though I cannot locate a specific field grade serial chart for FWS xx9, based on the use of the three digit block in 1946 and already being to four digit for FW Crown Grades in 1948 my gut is your gun is 1946, no later than 1947. |
