7/8 oz. loads using W572 will work in the 16 gauge, but it isn't a great combination. W572 is a bit on the slow side for 7/8 oz. unless you bring the velocity well into the 1,350+ FPS range. You will notice that Hodgdon doesn't post data for 7/8 oz. loads in the 16 gauge.

FWIW, I have worked a lot with W572 for 1 oz. and 1 1/8 oz. loads. Using data straight from Hodgdon, the cold weather performance was terrible, except for one 1 1/8 oz. load using Federal 209A primers. 7/8 oz. loads will really struggle with W572 when it gets cold.

In 50 degrees plus W572 works well in the 16 gauge, when that temp starts to dip, it really struggles. W572 is one of those powders that you have to make work, if not, the performance really suffers. It might be better suited for the 20 & 28 gauges, or very heavy loads in the 12 & 16. Since I live in ND, I won't buy any more W572.

As msm says. The 572 gets worse as the temp drops under 50*.Had a game shot Wednesday. 72* and things work as should at the back fences with 1 1/8 shot. I had a few left from last summer. Just now git them out. Probably won't load any more.

Just for the record...572 sucks in 28 ga. as bad as it does in 16 ga. I get occasional weak loads even at 50 degrees. I'm loading AA hulls, so leakage isn't an issue- the wads fit. Hogdon ought to give every customer a refund. How could they have not known this stuff was so erratic? Didn't they do any research testing?

I use Green Dot for my 7/8oz loads as 572 is too slow burning for light loads. I have used 572 for the past few years and have had no problem with it in 1oz 16 or 3/4oz 28ga loads..I shoot year round at the clays courses here in SE Kansas and Oklahoma and have enjoyed almost as much as the missing Universal.
