Gentlemen,

The PGC is trying to cut back Grouse & Woodcock season again, this time they want to cut it clear back to a week before Thanksgiving.

Please contact the PGC and let them know how you feel about loosing more of Grouse and Woodcock season. Even the RGS/AWS Society is against this move, especially removing the big Thanksgiving weekend, which is a big traditional Grouse hunting week end for most Pa Grouse hunters.

Call the PGC HQ at 833-742-9453 and make your views known! Better yet go on the PGC Web sight and leave a comment protesting the shortening of Grouse & Woodcock seasons,

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

Do they explain the reasoning behind shortening the season?

And I was hoping they’d bring back the after Christmas season. If the would learn how to do habitat creation the right way they’d have a lot more birds.

The reason was to add an additional week of deer, by the way the proposal was voted down (for now)

The fine print, so to speak, is that small game will stay open through the deer season.
The grouse season for this coming year will end on December 24.

That doesn't make up for eliminating the post-Christmas season.

Nor does it change that the fault for declining grouse in PA lies solely on the doorstep of the PGC and their indolent approach to early successional habitat.

Dave in Maine,

We still have real good Grouse hunting on the northern tier of Pa where all the logging goes on in Pa. Somerset County on the southern tier still has a decent Grouse population on the SGL, I found this out this season while Grouse hunting these areas. Unfortunately all the places in Westmoreland county have been mostly developed for new homes, eliminating those areas from Grouse hunting all together.

I do miss our great 2nd season for Grouse hunting very much, the PGC closing Grouse season just before Christmas really hurt Grouse hunting here in Pa, they should have left the season opened at least till the end of December. It was a real big tradition here in Pa to Grouse hunt during the Christmas vacation. A lot of old time Grouse hunters like myself were very up set with loosing this tradition of hunting Grouse thru the Christmas season. My hope is they will reinstate this traditional Grouse hunting time..

all the best,

Hope is not a plan.

Dave in Maine,

Our only hope is that Eric Miller the head Biologist for all the PGC Sate Game Lands will convince the upper management of the PGC to lengthen Grouse season until the end of December, giving Grouse hunters back our traditional Christmas season Grouse hunting time. Unfortunately their are so few PA Grouse hunters left that we can no longer put enough pressure on the PGC to treat use decently. The PGC has always been a pretty fair independent Game Commission, unfortunately that has changed severely.

all the best,

Post Christmas grouse hunts all through high school and college were and are a special memory of my life growing up in Pennsylvania. Dave, I hope they give you your hunts back.
