I am about to enter into a deal on a very nice 1941 vintage Elsie Field 12g (sorry). I was wondering what you experts thought of $900. It is all original with much CC and around 95% fading blue. The wood is also excellent. 28" m/f, 6 1/2 lb. It is the best I have seen recently, and for the money, seems like a fair deal.

Any comments?

Look through the LCs on GunBroker.com
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=64140149
High original quality 12g Fields are going for $1500
This could be a very good deal-let us know how it works out and post pics!

Don't get me started, Matt. Right now I'm trying to decide which rod to sell to raise the cash to buy the gun. Does this vicious cycle ever end?

Doc,

Will do. By the way, GulfCoast Guns is very slow to show pics of the other side of the guns on display. So far, no luck. I'll let you know when they do. Ref the crack on the $895 12ga Field, it is about an inch long and eminates from the upper half of the left side plate and goes back from there. Still no cloe-up pics, tho.

Hey Tex.,
Fjestad, Blue Book Value of Guns list and Field Grade, Smith at 90% for $1000 and 80% at $750. From a collectors stand point if the gun is all original with 95% or bettter CC, Wood Finish, Bbrl Black, Tigger Gaurd Black and Checkering they may go as high as $1500.
Just depends on the reason you want the gun and what the market will bear.

I would say go for it and join up with the LC Smith Collectors Assn.

Marc:

FWIW, I have $1100 in my 16 ga LC FW - well, that plus the costs of extended forcing cones and chokes Wink My LC came from OLathe KS (yes, revdocdrew I can say it now thanks). On the return trip to Russell KS I shot 8 roosters and 11 quail with it last weekend.

my gun is a 1946 with 28 inch barrels now choked 0.05 and 0.10

I think if you look the gun over and want it the price seems correct - I do have issue with the 12 ga choice Wink

good luck....

(and watch out, revdocdrew has a thing for sweet elsies Shocked

Mike,

Don't exile me to the LC Collector's Ass'n just yet. I do have a couple 16's. It's just that I would like an LC, but I don't want to pay the premium it takes to get a 16. That's my only logic for looking seriously at the 12. But thanks for your encouragement just the same. Laughing

Dr. 16ga,

You got a good buy! It's really tough to find a good 16 for less than $1300. Maybe if I say it long enough I'll get used to the price and just spring for the more expensive 16. In the mean time, I think there is room in the closet for another "outcast".

Well, my conscience got the best of me, so I backed out of the 12ga deal and opted for an even nicer 16ga. Now I can discuss this matter with a clear conscience on this august forum. Thanks for the help on the 12ga. I'm sure I'll eventually get over the premium I paid (which will remain confidential) for the 16ga upgrade.

Marc, you may have paid a premium, but the beauty is that it is easily recoverable if you decide to sell it - - unless you sell it for what you told your wife you paid for it. Laughing
