Duncan:

First let me say that I think your opening bid was very reasonable. I was seriously considering making a run at it, but, I have a 1950 gun that was my fathers. I just re-stocked it and it is earmarked for my nephew's son so it stays in the family. (I have no kids) I thought I might buy yours and send him mine. However, since my nephew's son is only 1 1/2 years old I have a little time before I have to send it to him Wink

Second, I think you are wise to hold on to it. SS's in that condition are hard to come by and will definately increase in value.

I saw the pic of yourself with the geese and you appear to be of average build and the gun should fit you pretty well. Don't give up on it just yet!

Matt

Thanks, Matt, for the encouragement......you and a couple others basically said the same thing: keep it..... I'm headin' for the feedlot tomorrow AM, about 2 hours north of here, last year about this time we shot 84 pigeons (2 of us), going for a new record. I am taking the Sweet 16.......I'm 6'2" and 205 lbs.....I think I can take it, I'll let you know how it goes, I owe the gun another chance, based on a lot of mails I got......my son will probably want it, anyhow....he'll be glad I kept it, too.....

Duncan

I also think you're wise to hang onto your Sweet Sixteen. Things have a way of coming around and I think you'll be glad you kept it in the end.

Duncan, we must have been typing at the same time. I had a long winded blab going, but I clipped it down to my last post.

Good luck on the pigeons! Sounds like a blast!

Dave,

I like your longwinded blabs, but thanks anyhow, for the affirmation... Very Happy

Good choice Duncan,

just use a little 3 in 1 oil on the magazine tube and put the rings on the heavy setting. You won't believe how much that reduces the recoil.

Best,
Brian

BG,

I didn't email you but I think you made a good choice. I sold an old Belgium A5, 32" Full vent rib etc years ago. I regret it every time I see another one. Not that I would be using it for much today but there was something about that gun.

I almost contacted you about your SS but did some restraining of myself knowing it would be another one I wouldn't shoot much if at all. Wink

Pass it on to your son.

I guess you made a good choice, but I'm a little dissapointed as I was monitoring the bidding and intended to throw down a fairly substantial bid.
Truthfully, I intended to not be out-bid!

Dear Birdswatter,

I'm sorry, I feel wrong for putting it on the block, then pulling it out like that.... but I got all these emails pleading with me to keep it, that I'd really regret it, etc etc..... so I was in a quandry, and finally yielded to the advice from folks with nothin to gain from their input....if it had been just one, I probably wouldn't have folded, put it was several.....saying the same thing.....

...so we broke our record today, smashed it, on live pigeons over decoys (then the bodies of the dead are better decoys than the carved pigeons)....we shot 104, last Feb it was 84....quite a shoot, even took a few with the Sweet 16, but I prefer my 5 pound French side by side, naturally..... it was foggy and still, with hoar frost over everything, best conditions I've ever experienced....sad to say, it's about 3 shells for each bird in hand, but I was running low on hulls anyhow, for all these new recipes you all have been giving me.......

.....take care,

Duncan

I never noticed, I put a few drops of oil as you suggested, the ring was already set for heavy loads (convex side out towards muzzle, correct? My 1963 model only has one ring, I had a 50's one for awhile and it had 2 rings)....). Question: How tight do you screw the end cap on? As tight as it'll go?

thanks,

Duncan

I wasn't the one who suggested oil on the magazine tube. I think you want to shoot that as dry as possible so long as it still functions. Here's a link to the friction ring settings.

http://www.browning.com/faq/detail.asp?ID=105

The Magnum 20's and 12's have the two friction rings. Sweet 16's just have one.

Tighten the forend down tight and then back it off one "click".

Oh, sorry about that (the oil thing), and thanks for the tip on the end cap....Can these SS's handle the heaviest, higher pressure loads OK?
