Had to put down my cancer ravaged old yellow friend this AM.
She was a great Lab with a huge heart and genuine anger toward the Cock Pheasant. She spent a life figuring out the wiley ways of Mr.Cock and often read him like a book with seemingly a great big lab smile on her face.
She looked at me last night and asked that I spare her any more pain.
As she was reliant on me for relief, I had to do the right thing.
She went to sleep peacefully as any being I've ever seen.
It was almost as if she knew...........
I met my wife who already owned this dog for 1 year before her and I hooked up. I take full blame for spoiling her girl and letting her sleep on my bed at the motels her and I frequented during Rooster season.
And, take blame for introducing her to the rooster which became a mutual addiction. Shortly aaafter we met my male lab "Pal" died at 10 years old and it was her dog that helped kill the pain a bit. Now, I have a youngster age 1 1/2 to help ease the pain a bit. They were great friends and I don't know how the youngster's gonna behave without her mamma around who was definitely the Queen Bitch. They wrestled every day and night while we watched the TV and provided much entertainment. I think the youngster enriched her life in her last year and helped her live amybe a bit longer. She was pretty restricted to the couch back then becasue of her broken and arthritic shoulder. The lil one kept her occupied and engaged in life. |

Sorry, Jig. Sounds like you had some great times together. May those memories never fade.

Jiggy,
Loyal and forgiving hunting companions are to be treasured, and I am sure she treasured you as much as you her. There is no doubt she enriched your life profoundly, and I am also sure you thanked her frequently for doing so. When it's time, it's time. You did your duty to her, just as she did countless times for you. Please accept my deepest sympathies. I think I'll go give my beautiful Brittany a few extra hugs right now. |

Jig, I'm so sorry to hear that she is gone. They rely on us to do the right thing and allow them to go. We suffer so that they don't. She loved you. |

Jig, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I know how it hurts to see your best hunting buddy decline (I had to put 3 of them down in less than a year). Fortunately, we can give them a gift that we humans are not entitled to. I am sure that she will live in your heart for your remaining years.
As timing would have it, I just picked up my new lab puppy today. So the cycle begins again.

My condolences. I fear the day I'm forced to go through it. |

jig,
My thoughts are with you as I've traveled that road myself. Remember the great times you had with her and bring the youngster along the same path.
While hunting and shooting a rooster or two tomorrow I'll remember your girl and all the others that have gone before.
They serve us all well and should never be forgotten. |

As I sit at the computer, Peaches lay at my feet , I said after loosing my old Judy girl I would never love again BUT I find myself hugging Peach and find that I can love another and am greatful that another has come along.
I wish you well in your quest to find your new love.

Wow, Jig, sorry for your loss. May your younger one give you as much joy as you found with the one you just lost.
I can say from experience your young one will notice the difference. I watched my young (at the time) springer grow up almost overnight a few years ago when I lost Lucy. She went from being the playful puppy to the serious hunter when she realized she didn't have Lucy around anymore to show her the way.
Give your young dog a hug for all of us, and hang in there. I think most of us here have been where you're at -- it's not easy losing a cherished member of the team. |

I know what you are going thru. Been there a couple of times myself and probably a couple of times again. So I will say to you both.
My hats is off and my wine glass is high to you both, who are true friends to each. |
