Am thinking of buying this gun and wondering what the general opinion is.

1970 Merkel 201E, 16 ga, as new condition, original and unmarked, cocking indicators, ejectors, two piece forearm, pistol grip with CHEEKPIECE, all numbers match, 28"barrels choked 1/2 and full. I know what the book says-I'm interested in the real world. What will it cost to take off the cheek piece and refinish-is it worth it.

My smith convinced me to not take the cheek pieces off. the cast(or something like that ) will be lost and then you'll be into bending to get it to line back up, under your eye.

Hello Jon,

Now that looks like one pretty gun. Good luck with it. I've removed the cheek piece on several German and Belgian guns. But, remember now, that I am a left handed shooter. I've had to bend stocks any way. Between bending, removing the cheek piece, refinishing and sometimes recheckering, I've spent between $300.00 and $500.00. I hope this helps.

When you get a chance, tell us more about the gun. (weight, barrels, etc).

Regards,

Peter

I'm not a big fan of cheekpieces either, although I kind of have a soft spot in my heart for them. My first classic sxs, prewar Sauer 16, had one. And I agree with huns--taking the cheekpiece off isn't all that hard, and the gun may look better, but it won't fit you the same any more.

How come when you bring up a topic on a Merkel, we can't keep you guys on the subject Wink

I'm passing on this one. I'll wait for one with a straight stock-if you're patient, it always happens.

Jon, you just have to put up with the vageries and meanderings of this bunch. Some of us are a bit cerebrally challanged; the rest of us are just plain nuts. Rolling Eyes Nonsequitors are our specialty. And now a poem:

Roses are red, and violets are blue.

I like peanut butter. Can you swim?

I just paid that for a Beretta.

Seems like a steal for an "as new" merkel. Not sure about the model you're looking at but it's hard to find a 16/20 for less than $3000.

Unless there is something you aren't seeing or being told about the gun, buy it.

Like Huns said, Merkels are laser guided, feather seeking, tail busting, cackling silencers, pheasant downing machines. Wink
