No, not a rant on anything- I really am sick and tired. Got the flu or something Friday, went ahead and did my typical twice a year charity work on a Habitat House on Saturday, and by Sunday was really sick. So I've been in bed or at the computer most of the day, and was staring at my unsightly legs still suffering from all the West Texas stickers and needles that laughed at my brush pants last day of quail season.
So, long intro to my question- anyone have the Turtleskin chaps? I am not going to W Texas again without some better armor, and was wondering what some of my 16 ga brethren use.

Mike: hope you get feeling better soon. We had a pukin' poopin' flu going through Phoenix 2-3 weeks ago.
I was very pleased with the Cabelas 5X Upland pant this season both here in AZ and back in KS-very comfortable and tough. I tuck them into 17" Russell Turkey Hunter snake proof boots though and the boots took most of the cactus spines and stickers. |

Rev- the upland pants I was wearing were from Cabela's, but don't know if they are the 5X pants you linked to. My host had chaps on, and said they were the only thing that worked for him that part of TX. Thanks for the feedback.

I've got a pair of those 5X, too. Lighter than faced jeans, but just as tough or tougher. They dry fast, too. |

Ever try Filson single tin chaps? Never attempted any cactus (we don't have any), but they work on multiflora rose. |

Fred- I think that's what my host had on. Looked cool, and with his Stetson he was a dead ringer for the Marlborough man. I don't look that good. |

I've got an old (30 years?) pair of Bob Allen chaps, never seen anybody else with a pair. Leather front, cloth back, the belt has a bunch of snaps to adjust the waist size. I've worn these so long that the front of the legs which originally was a split leather suede-like finish is mostly smooth and shiny. They work greast until it gets cold enough that I have to go to the Carhartt insulated bibs.

Filson pants works good for me. Protects you from the waist down----not just your legs! |

Filson makes great chaps, sort of a pain to get into and out of though,
A company called Wicks makes a chap called "tougher than hell"briar pants they come in chaps and bibs and the zipper comes all the way to the crotch very easy to get in and out of. These are light weight, bullet proof
and breath, very nice product, I have used them in west Texas and they hold up. I also order their tougher than hell material and make dog boots
for the West Texas sand spurs. |

double front Carhartts have always served me fine.....
but I've never hunted where you are, so maybe you're foliage is more agressive, though we do have some fairly vile wild rose brush and big honkin' thorn bushes, such that can maim a man quick.... if you do get chaps, get something light AND tough... I try to cut myself as much slack as possible in the weight dept... |

Wingshooter, I have the turtleskin chaps, love them, but they are 200 a copy. I also hav ethe cabella briarskin pants, which are turtle skined faced at 100 a pair, my next purchase will be the briar skin chaps which are turtleskin faced and only 60-70. the full on turtleskins are a little stiff, and haven't seemed to break in, after 10hunts.
the turtleskin stuff seems almost impenerable to thorns and what not(chaps) the cabbela pants are the same, but they may use a liter fabric on the face, and the pants themselfs are lite and flexable.
4 thumbs up for the turtleskin, but I'd buy the cabella brand and save the ching.
Tim
Hey just relized this is off topic, as we didn't mention 16ga's,
Soooooooooo as a disclaimer, the only time I wear my turtleskins in when I'm carrying my sauer 16, simson 16, austrian guild 16 ahmmer, or my pheasent killing lazer beamed merkel, which happens to be a 1620. The only 16 I don't carry is my Lc in 16 as I'm concerned over barrel strength. It may blow being almost as poorly enginered as a sterlingworth. In fact I'm haveing the office Mgr bos it up for shippment to Rev. maybe when it goes it will take him and kat-dog out.
looks like I took care of the lack of 16's being mentioned |

Nantan-
I too am dependent upon the gracious invite of others to chase the little rocket with wings. Thanks for the well wishes.

Filson chaps are the way to go when you're chasing quail in the desert. I have a pair of the lighter weights and they work great.
