.....I have one twelve bore left, a Win 21..... and I am even considering trading it off for a 21 in 16 bore..... what do you guys think? I hardly ever shoot it anymore, dare I go twelveless, put my money where my mouth is, and use my 16's for everything, like, well, I guess I already do? Do I really need the psychological crutch of knowing I have a 12ga "just in case" when all my behaviors indicate I don't?

Vicious dummy slaps AND encouraging pats on the back are as equally welcome......

....would be particularly interested if anybody else out there ever stumbled upon this crossroads, and dared to take the road less travelled..... Confused

Often wondered the same thing

But i'm not in the Model 21 league $$ wise

and i just can't find a 16 ga Model 101 to trade my 12 ga for... Laughing

i'd say go for it.... if you "repent (backslide)" there's always a lot more 12's around anyway

I just happened to get a sceamin deal when I was in the gun biz on the 21, it was in the guy's fam for 3 generations and the guy needed cash due to divorce....otherwise, I would have never sprung for one 'cause by that time I had already been overcome by the spirit of cheap....

thanks for "go for it" no. 1.....

It would be easy for me; I'd never even owned a 12 until I "inherited" a Fox Model B that I found for my late father-in-law; he wanted a cheap double and he was a definitely a 12ga guy. Anyway, it's an early 60's with a vent rib, probably a 95% gun, and I've never even had it out of the cabinet except to wipe it down. It ain't no Model 21, but then again, it was his...I'll probably keep it forever.

If I could trade that 21 for a 16 I'd be tempted; otherwise I'd hang on to it. JMHO.

I have 2 12's and 2 16's. The only thing I use my M1200 for is deer hunting, and I don't do much of that anymore, here in S. Michigan. My other 12 is my Dad's M12 3" chambered goose gun. I haven't shot that in years. I won't sell it because of the sentimental value. I use my 16's for skeet, 5-stand, sporting clays, and of course upland bird hunting. Don't hunt waterfowl anymore. So I say go ahead and sell the 12 and get a 16.
Just my opinion. And like as..er bellybuttons, everyone has one.

Get rid of that 12 ! I got an ol'Iver Johnson single bbl. 12 in my barn I'll send ya till the withdrawls end ! Razz
Seriously a 21 in 16 is "big time WOW!" something to be buried with. Maybe this will help: I hunt everything with a 16 here and I am talking cottontails to geese! Not the same gun, I have a few. Don't let anyone tell you can't take turkey or geese with a 16. The only advantage to a 12 is more ammo is available BUT us 16'ers just about to the man loads are own. Hey , theres some guy out there just dying to get his hands on that 12 ga. 21---poor guy. Smile

The only 12 gauge you need is a beater one you take on fowl weather waterfowl hunts and throw in the mud and bottom of the boat, dunk in the river and keep under the back seat of the pickup. The reason it needs to be a twelve is that I wouldn't want a sixteen treated like that. So I guess your model 21 doen't fit that bill so get rid of her. Get a 16 gauge model 21 and a 12 gauge to beat and abuse on tough hunts. One great point already made was you can always get another 12 gauge.

(This isn't revdoc, just some guy in Waziristan who's got his SS #, MasterCard #, Cabelas card #, and his momma's maiden name Cool
Anyway-keep the M21. It ain't gonna depreciate, and there'll be some late season day in Montana when the snow's blowing and the birds are flushing wild that you'll need that little bit of extra confidence in your load and gun. BTW: the daughter of the former finance minister of the Pashtun in Balochistan urgently wants to send you money from her United Nations bank account in France. Very much thanking you for your prompt response Rolling Eyes )

wow, society member formally known as revdoc, so you got the daughter's email too? have you gotten your cut yet from the kajillion rubles that she wants to leave to my charity?? I'm still waiting.....

but, but (he sputtered and blurted) I'm shocked....you actually recommend retaining this blasphemous behemouth?? Can't I swap it for the same gun in 16, oh please oh please??? Consider that with the unshootapartability of the model 21, I can shoot the most staggeringly potent maxed out loads imaginable, duplicating (if not actually surpassing...heh heh) the 12 bores wattage.... rethink this, I implore you, nay, BESEECH YE....you'd better pray about this some more..... Smile ...and the 16 I'm looking at is choked MOD/FULL, perfect for those late blustery windy wild flushin waning season days....heck, the 12 is choked like SKT 1 and SKT 2...... c'mon now doc, be swayed....... come back to us, doc..... you've been deceived..... maybe some counseling is in order.....?? Very Happy

Do not dump it for the sake of dumping it - it's a tool, use it as such - if it's a tool that you can trade for another gun or sell to a person who truly appreciates it's value - great.

Either way and/or in anycase - use it well but by no means just loose it for the bragging rights of saying "I'm all 16".

Be smart and use it as the opportunity arrives.

Or not and say, "It's an investment and I'm waiting for a larger return." Wink

thanks, but in the immortal words of Walter Brennan (remember The Guns of Will Sonnett?)....."no brag, just fact....."

...I think it's down to what kind of trade I can get for it on a 16 Model 21, at this point......indeed, I HAVE killed a lot of ducks and geese with the 12 bore, but lately, they have been tumbling to the lethal bark of my sixteens..... with equal efficiency.... what it has come down to is....do I really NEED this gun anymore?? What would I enjoy and actually USE? The answer is appearing to be a 21 in sixteen......might as well put the $ into something I'll shoot, as I don't have much of a collector mentality, I like to shoot everyhting I have...... it's a tough call and I'm still weighing the wise words...... thanks, I WILL try to be smart and wait for the best opportunity...
