I have always been a by the book reloader. As my stash of Rem 209P's is about gone and are no longer available locally I e-mailed Alliant about substituting primers for my 1 ounce 12 gage load and received the following reply:
If you sub the Win 209 or CCI 209 for the Rem 209P, then reduce the
powder charge by approx 1/2 gr. If you sub the hotter Fed 209A for the
Rem 209P, then reduce the powder charge by 1 gr. Thanks for your
interest in contacting us and have a nice day.

Your data for 12 gage Remington STS shells using 1 ounce of shot and the
Remington TGT 12 wad and red dot powder show only the Remington 209
primer in the data. Can CCI or Fed or Win primers be used as the Rem is
not available locally. Thank you.
I am sure this is "old news" to some of you but I am presenting this to enlighten others like myself.
If I am reading this correctly then any primer can be sub'd for Fed 209 data. And the Rem primer can be sub'd for CCI or Win 209 data. |

I think you're on the right path there. There has been some data that shows that different primers, even the ones considered "cooler", can create a higher pressure load with the right powder. I don't think its a legitimate concern though.
I will suggest one primer though if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to the Rem 209 primer, the Fiocchi 616. Usually going for about $85 per 5000. It is almost identical to the Win 209 in performance. I've used a bunch and have had great success with them. |

Agreed, the Fiocchi 616 is a nice spark plug, a bit less expensive and, as it's just a tiny bit larger that the others, a nice snug fit even in the Federal cases. |

That is my recollection as well, Hoa...don't think the 615 is available any more. |

Actually I have been thinking of trying the Nobelsport 209's. Ran across them while cruising (Gamaliel?) and they were priced in the mid 80's IIRC. |

According to Lyman's 4th edition, if you look at the Fiocchi recipes on pg 176, you'll see the 615 in a comparable load with the Win209. The Fiocchi load contains a higher powder charge and is 1000 PSI LOWER than the Winchester charge.
That leads me to believe the 615 is cooler than the 616 since there are several recipes where the 616 and Win209 post very similar data. |
