I'm looking for the most popular chokes used by board members in their doubles...
I currently have full/mod - or more correctly tight IC/tight Mod - I'm considering having them opened or of tubed... |

I am now using tubes with the new 1620. Prior to that my 47E was choked Skt1 and Skt2. Works real well over the pointing dogs by changing the ammo to meet the needs of the day. |

I've found .010" and .020" (10 and 20 points) to be a very useful combination. By manipulating loads from spreaders to cased wad loads, I can obtain any degree of spread I want without changing choke tubes. I just drop in the right shells, and I'm ready. |

Guy - You're probably the only one here who speaks in "points" for chokes - what does .02 & .01 relate to in words? I'm not gonna go back and search out the explanation thread. |

A 'point' is .001" or one thousandth of an inch.
This is how my guns are set up:
16g. LC Smith low gun skeet and quail gun: .002/.010 (Sk 1/Sk 2)
16g. LC Smith all-around bird and clays gun: .006 and .014 (Imp/Mod)
12g. (oh the shame )Sterly S. Dakota pheasant gun: .015 and .035 (Lt Mod/Full) |

My Brit 12ga has sk1 and Full which is a pretty potent combo for prairie birds. My 16ga has the ubiquitous fixed chokes of I/M. |

These are all 16's:
my Frenchie has tubes, but I leave in CYL/IC all the time
the Sterly is .005 and .012
The 21 is IC and FULL (may open this up)
The Elsie will end up IC/IC (maybe .007/.007) or something like that, not completely sure yet.... will use mostly for targets (sporting clays)..
Sweet 16 is a tight browning MOD
Model 12 is IC
Model 37 is CYL
Lefever is IM and FULL
Model 311 is IC and LT. MOD
The Manufrance Robust is SKT/IC |

Over pointing dogs, I shoot skt/mod-with a double trigger, I feel I'm ready for any bird out to 45 yds-beyond that I let 'em go. |

Skeet I / Mod is my choice. However, based on my style, I may soon be looking at skeet I / Imp Mod (or full). Around the time I started noticing grey hairs, I also started noticing that I hesitate my second shot.
Examine your shooting style before you start boring out chokes. |

I came to believe that I have been 'over choked' for most of my shooting life and consequently, several years ago, settled for Skeet and a light Modified.
I also suspect what we choose is to some extent dictated by the game we play and tuned to our personal reaction time, etc. |

Sprocket, I'd go imp/mod, given that your still hunting over different types of dogs. Of course till you learn to let the birds get further than 15 feet away the sawed off 20" cowboy action sxs with spreader loads might be your best choice.
BTW the Simson is supposed to be back next month(the merk knock off) your more than welcom to it for the summer, heck the stock guy said the sauer will be back pretty soon as well so if you'd rather that No biggy |

Thanks Tim - I appreciate the offer greatly.
All,
My intention with this post is to determine if I wanted to open up the chokes on my little shooter or not and also to where - Also to get a feel for the types of chokes relative to hunting/shooting styles.
I've decided to leave my gun alone and the next gun I get will be more openly choked. In the meantime I'll be getting some of those spreader button thingies and making some special loads for those days I may be fortunate enough to be hunting with dogs...and learning to count to five after I have to step on a bird to get it airborne .
Thanks All for your participation |

15 feet!!?? Heck sprocket, I have a old shrimping net with a handle longer than that from my Florida days. I'll trade you it for any double gun you have. |

netting is illegal - you know that besides I doubt you'd want my modest little gun as it is free from all adornment or decoration - it also weighs 7lbs or so - prolly more but I dare not check. Oh it's also older than you so it does not fit your self imposed "modern gun" criteria.
If you decide you'd like to make a trade however, I'm willing to consider parting with it - bring the citori |
