Have been reading up on Merkel 16ga, was told there is a new model 1622
Anyone with experience with this model, and would know how it compares to the previous model 16ga. Thanks.

I think you may mean the 122, which is a model made for the European market; some dealers managed to import some to the States. I recall seeing one or two at a Scheels store. They're sideplated boxlocks, quite attractive. However, they are a good bit heavier than the 1620's--like by at least half a pound, I think.

Pretty sure it is a 1622, supposed to be a new model( I guess it could be a rebadged Euro model).........did a search, a couple at cabelas etc....

I don't see it listed on the GSI website. But that doesn't necessarily mean much.

In checking their 2007 catalog, the 1622 is listed. The description is a little confusing, but it seems the only difference in the spec listing is that the 1622 has "ornamental sideplates" but otherwise the same as the 1620.

I've seen a couple offered for sale on GA and Gunbroker but have not seen one in person.

I think like state, it's got the "sideplates" for those that like the look.

Anyone shooting a 1620, how do you still like your guns? and any merkels to stay away from ?

Well, that looks like the 122 I saw, although that one had coin finished rather than CC sideplates, and it definitely was not in the 1620 lightweight class. So apparently this is basically a 1620 with sideplates. Given that you can get a new 1620 for about $1500 less, I don't think I'd pay the difference for sideplates.

I agree Larry, after talking to dealers yesterday, you would be paying about 700 for the case hardened sideplates, very little engraving, and 4 more ounces...........hey the marketing department won on that one.

How is it in Parker? we are in grand juntion, where did you find your 1620?

Highcountry, the problem with any case hardened finish is it will rust faster than hot blued or coined finishes. you must keep them wiped down well or pay the price in faded colors and surface rust.

My MX8 Perazzi has a case hardened finish. Perazzi used to put a light coat of laquer over the case hardening to protect it. Where ever the laquer has worn through, the case hardening is soon to go if I don't keep it clean. I touched up the worn edges and exposed places with thinned out Tough As Nails fingernail polish after carefully wiping the metal down underneath with isopropyl alchohol to remove any acids or rust inducing salts. So far, its held up well.

Sunlight also fades cased colors, so don't leave your gun out in the sun in a gun rack al day unless you have a UV inhibitor of some type on the metal. Tough As Nails does this well. Perhaps there is a laquer or clear coat spray that does the same thing. An automotive paint shop would be a good place to look.
