This spring it's my turn for a pup. My dog is turning 10 in June so I'm bringing home his niece in a week or so. Today I had some business near the breeder so I stopped by to visit the little girl. I can barely wait!

Her name is Gretchen. I own her uncle and owned her great aunt (who I had to put down several years ago). I look foward to many happy years with her. Here's a picture of her sire (my current dogs brother).

scatrgunr,
Great looking pooches. Are they wired hairs or Drahthaars? |

GWP's. Here's my 10 year old male nailing a rooster. He had a parathyroid gland removed two weeks ago and is recovering nicely.

I'm sorry to change the nayure of this post.
What exactly is the difference between a Wire Hair and a Drahthaar?
A Short Hair and a Kurzhaar?
And Duncan... stay out of this discussion, I'm looking for information, not recipes. |

PGG, the basic difference between a AKC GWP and a VDD Drahthaar is that the VDD has a strict set of tests/rules before allowing a dog to be used for breeding for a registered litter. The AKC only needs the sire and dam to be purebred with no requirements or tests other than that. Basically it means the breeding is more controlled in the Drahthaar world and you are more likely to get a quality dog, while in the GWP world you must do your homework more carefully to insure a quality dog. There is also a slight difference in the breed standards, mostly with regards to allowable colors. All GWP's descended from Drahthaars of European origin but the VDD does not register AKC GWP's. The AKC will however register Drahthaars as GWP's. Generally speaking, the AKC GWP's have become more of a bird dog while VDD Drahthaars remain more aligned with the feather and fur origin of the breed. All this being said, the best Drahthaar is not necessarily better than the best GWP and vice versa.
I hope this clears it up for you. |

Agreed. It is the strict trials and guidelines of the breed that make the DD such a great all around dog. They aren't bred for showing, they are a working breed.
Same was true about the Jack Russel before the AKC allowed them in. Now you find them in every pet shop around. They killed the breed from what it was.
A couple of pics of my DD's. [/img] |

I have it on definate authority that spring has flushed, sprung, happened, whatever. Max has bred 2 of my girls and Cooper was succesfull with Ruby so at least three litters of Gun Bred old style Setters are expected here on the island this year. last year we had two. 9 pups total sold every one in a 10 week period. When spring comes to the islands in Maine I allways breath a sy of relief and believe that winter dosent last forever. |

CL,
Sounds like you will be busy with the patter of little feet soon. Good luck with all the pooches. |

Can I over-simplify this (while not being insulting) by stating that they are both shorthairs, but one breed is much stricter.
TJC,
Some beautiful looking dogs there. Good luck with them.
Where were those photos taken? That background looks an awful like a place I know of called the "Knoll". |

I would say they are both wired hairs with one breed being stricter. Nothing short on either the Wired Hair or DD.
Those pics were taken at a preserve in Pa, Powderbourne last Wed. It was our last outing for the seasaon. |
