I can testify to Wingshooter's prowess with the uncheckered Arrieta. While recently attending the famed Flatwater Sporting Clays event in Nebraska, I had squaded with him several times and he is no slouch. The problem is that doves can be the most exasperating gamebird on the wing with their own special areial acrobatics.
Duncan, do you use #6 on your flying "rats". |

Yes, I do....often with 7 1/2's I'll see a huge cloud of feathers and the bird keeps flying quite a ways before finally spinning down....like a quarter mile! So I switched to 6's and see more quicker kills. I might try some of Charles' hot 1500 fps 1 oz. 7 1/2's however, and try his "speed kills" theory on the rats.... they are one adrenalin charged skittish bird when lead starts whizzin, and can go a long ways with a gut full of shot, if a wing isn't hit nor "boiler room" pierced.... |

Duncan, where do you place your stand when you hunt feedlots? I would imagine the cattle are in a different location and you would use camo? |

We put out a few wooden dekes first in a dirt road running along the lot. The cows are right there in the lot, and we simply sit against the fence on overturned feed pails, the cows behind us. They get used to it pretty quick and don't freak too bad. The pigeons come right in to 8-9 decoys. After shooting 5-6 birds, the wood decoys can be collected if you wish, as the pigeons decoy great on dead pigeons. We don't need to camo up, as the birds really fix in on the decoys, you just need to sit still until it's time to take 'em... maybe wear some neutral colors, not too light, not too dark. |

I love to eat Dove. Would I shoot one off the wires or tree limb, well that depends on many things. But, yes in a heartbeat. Oh I wouldnt do it in the normal course of a hunt. But on day 2-3 with nary a love bird in my bag, the fall rains coming in and 200 miles and another year until next dove season - I wouldnt hesitate. Would I preferr to shoot one out of the air? Of course. Do I hurt the dove population every year - hardly. First off the dang things literally start to fidget before the car engine even shuts off, then they fly like friggin acrobats and seem to be able to actually dodge shot loads. Before I started using my current dove strategies, I was way more likely to resort to this distastefull practice. But now I hunt wheat stubble (doves love) with styrofoam decoys in decent numbers place on the ground - they work like magic. So in the last 5 years or so I havent close lined any. When I was a kid though, we used to drive along the dirt roads with some of us sitting in the back of a pickup truck slamming them off the telephone wires at will. Am I proud of that? No. But unsupervised country boys with a penchant for sport and mischief can do some pretty redneck things. At least I'm honest about it. |

....you know what chaps my backside is the fact that dove season starts here in Montany on the 1st of Sept...... right about the time we get our first frost, which sends the fragile doves packing for warmer, southern climes, at least well over half of 'em split.... so ya gots to takes 'em as you sees 'em, or they'll be outta here....
I was in Connecticut last weekend and the doves back east look twice as big as these little maggot doves we got.... they looked nearly the size of a sky rat!!
.... jig, thanks for the transparency.... yeah, unsupervised farm boys with guns.... yeeeeee haaaaaa...... often difficult to get the gun switched off in those days, eh? ...." Hey Jed, betcha I can hit that yield sign from here, yuk yuk"..... Then Jed casually hawks up a big tobaccy luger and in his finest backwoods drawl replies....."You're a daisy if ya do"....

Untill my friends Chubby and Tubby started hunting with me they didn't know a dove could be shot in the air!
Best,
Mike |
