Hi guys, longtime lurker here, Packerken. While the allure of the 16 hit me a year or so ago, I just came home from a gun show today with my first 16. A pretty little sxs
She's a 5.25lb.beauty with 26.75" tubes. Maker apears to be Hubertus. I never heard of the maker, but the guy I traded with claims it was made by Merkle.
I planned on holding out until I found a 16 ga. Fox that I could afford, but this little sweety was irresitable at 600 bucks. Don't know if it was a good buy for shure but it is well made in nice condition and I LIKE IT
Anyone ever heard of Hubertus?
thanks, Ken |

I don't think it's a Merkle. I was thinking it was either made or distrubuted by Meffert the Suhl Maker..I've seen a few over the years, seemeed to be a well made post war gun.. Prussian Gun Guy should have something on it.. MDC |

Hubertus was a German maker in Suhl (Germany's gunmaking capitol) before the War. I don't know much about them, except they were well made, high quality guns. Yours, at 5.25 lbs sounds sweet. Don't forget to check the chambers.
Basically, a "Guild" gun was made in pieces. There was no factory for much of the manufacturing process. One man filed the actions in his home workshop. Another did the stock work in his. In the end, the retailers name was added to the finished product.
I don't believe that Hubertus was a guild gun. (But I could be wrong). If you check out the German gun club ( www.germanguns.com ) they may have more info. I do know that they have reprints available of a Hubertus Catalog from between the Wars.
Good luck with that gun. Don't forget to post photos when you can. |

Ken: When I posted before, I was going from memory, At my age that can be dangerous. If you Google Hubertus/ Meffert, you'll get several hits indicating that Hubertus was a Trade Name used by Inmmanual Meffert.. I'm relieved that my mind isn't completely gone.. MDC |

Two years ago i was hunting quail with a friend who has a passion for German guns and he was shooting a beautiful little Meffert like this. His 3rd shot blew up the right barrel right in front of the chamber. There was no barrel obstruction except the wad from the previous shot. It took off the end of his left index finger but he was more concerned about messing up his gun. We took him to the hospital and they dressed the wound. He borrowed my Parker and was shooting that afternoon. I don't believe I could have done that.
The whole thing is in litigation. All he wanted was his gun repaired. Didn't care about his finger. That's how nice these little Mefferts really are |

not to be a ass but, " no obstuction, except the wad" ?? Am I reading out of context? and is the litigation with the ammo mfg? And ok, since I guess I am being ass, how hot were the loads?? Scarry when a liberal from Ma spends so much time on "these" gun sites that I start to understand what it's all about, and which questions to ask.
Oh my gosh, I was having a, in someone else's body experance and thought I was 16gauge guy
Just kidding guy. You going to make it up for either of the shoots? |

drducati, I seem to be a bit confused about the tone of your comments about the Hubertus that brother packerken acquired. Your post seems unclear as regards the reason you posted such a hazy sentiment.
Would you care to enlighten the brotherhood? |

Hi guys.
Hubertus was a "trade name" for the firm of Immanuel Meffert. Several Prussian gunmakers used trade names. Meffert used their own actions, barreled actions, as well as actions from Merkel. A similarity to a Merkel might not be coincidence at all.
Any chance you can post some photos and specs on your gun? |
