| < 16ga. Guns ~ Opening up chokes? |

| What do you guys think of opening up chokes on an 1948 FW field grade LC smith? It has the factory tighter than a frogs a$$ full and extra-full currently. I do know that shells like double wide vintagers are an option but I plan on using this gun for my every-day shooter, and shot selection is severely limited on the doublewides. Since the gun will be re-finished (already has a botched re-blueing job) I don't think it will hurt the value any further. I don't currently do any re-loading but I guess I would consider it. I think the IC and Mod combo would be great for pheasants and grouse. what do you guys think? |

Welcome Mark and you have great taste in SxSs 
No reason not to make any 'shooter' right for you. You'll use and enjoy the gun much more. Sk1/Sk2 or I/M are great choices for clays and birds, esp over pointing dogs. You might have these fellas do a check and clean, open the chokes, and glasbed the stock. You'll then be good for another 60 years or so

I'd open them up. Modern shotshells don't need the tight chokes of yesteryear. I had the chokes on my old Marlin 90 opend to sk and ic and it busts targets as well as any shotgun I've ever owned.
Curtis Wilbanks aka Gun Docc is the man as far as I'm concerned when it comes to shotgun barrels.

| Both the gunsmiths I contacted wanted to see the gun before they could give me a quote, and an idea of what needed to be done. I should be able to make it to Ahlmans this week. Thanks for the help and I'll post some before and after pics if I do drop it off for the cosmetic and barrel work. |

I have one, too, and I AM opening mine up, and the most choke I would use would be Skt I and SKT II, maybe even a little more open than that, like a "lt SKT and and IC..... I think you'll be very happy you did it...

I would send the barrels to Mike Orlen.
I think he charges about $40.00 a hole and you'll have them back in a week. He'll open them to whatever you want, and he does great work.
