Is the Model 58 a true 16 gauge, or is it simply a 16 gauge gun built on a 12 gauge frame?

They're on a 12ga frame. If you're concerned about weight as a result, consider that they weigh the same as a Sweet Sixteen of the same configuration, those older Remingtons are a nice lively gun.

Not in my experience. I think you're confusing the 58 with the early 870.
The 3 Sweet 16s I've weighed ran from 6.72 - 6.98 lbs, which compares favorably with the 1956 16 ga 870 (28" plain) I have @ 6.63.
However, the 1957 Sportsman 58 16 ga I've had since I was 12 tips the scale @ 7.86.

While both the early 870s and the 58 were built on 12 ga frames, the weight difference is evidently in wood density and barrel contour.

The old Browning catalog I have lists Sweet 16 at 6 lb 10 oz. Which is in line with foursquares measurements.

So? Use it for some 1-1/4 oz pheasant loads, or roll some Bismuth Duck loads. Sure, no advantage over a 12 gauge, but who cares? At least your buddies won't mooch any ammo off of you.... Wink

I know the 16 gauge Remington 58 that chilly460 is talking about and it does not weigh in at 7.86 lbs. I can assure you of that.In fact it weigh close to his sweet sixteen.

old hunter, i got your std 16 reassembled and the stock truoiled w/ cleaning up the checkering included in the operation. put in your new action spring and shot 47/50 at the 18 yd line and 35/50 from 24 yd line w/ 1 ox, 7.5's. i'm a shitty shot so 82/100 is good. that is a sweet weapon. i love it! the choke works well as far as i can tell. i'll pattern it soon. just a great piece of machinery! i got a kick out of taking it down and trying to figure out how it actually works. not sure if i have yet. next up is that std 12.

Glad you like it. You're shooting a lot better then I ever could. Trap or skeet I just could never concentrate enough. If the wings aren't flapping I can't hit it. The last three hunts up at the preserve, I haven't missed a pheasant except for one, that time I hit a pine tree square. There is just no way to fix a pine tree so it tastes good. maybe I'll have it mounted.

i've never hunted animals. after rvn the only animals i saw needed killing were 2 legged and walked upright. this fall i'm taking a big chance, for me, and going w/ 8 guys who've sorta adopted me from the local gun club to winner, sd for a pheasant hunt. i'll only kill what i'll eat and i eat a lot so i'm hoping to limit everyday. like to try grouse and doves here in kentucky and maybe w/ this trip under my belt i will. can't see myself sharing the c
ompany of 7 others for 8 days but hell i'm up to try if they are.

i betcha my gramma coulda cooked up that pine so you'd a been beggin' fer 2nds! god bless her soul she was a keeper

Don't pass up the trip to South Dakota. I've seen my share of 50 pheasants getting up in front of the dogs. I limit my pheasant hunting now to the local preserve. Most of my hunting is now Grouse up here in northern Minnesota. I like walking the trails in the woods and watching the dogs work. That sixteen will do you just fine on those pheasants. I allways used number 4's and had the choke set at I/C. When the others miss you can drop the bird quite a ways out. If you think you'll be taking the first shot, put in a number 6 as with the number 4 you'll come home with hamburger. Thats how I use my O/U's now. 6 in the first barrel and 4's in the second. These PMC 4's will reach out a long ways. Chuckars this sunday. Taking the pup up early in the morning for a little training. I don't know where you did your hunting of two legged animals, but for the grace of god I'm still here. Right now I have twop dogs laying on my couch's, look out the window and three yellow birds at the feeders. Enjoy life, and good luck on your trip.

Just because your experience does not match mine does NOT mean that I'm confused. 28" plain barrel Model 58 and Sweet Sixteen, both weigh 7lb 2oz on the same scale.

.

I don't know who he's related to as he is a rescued dog. Got him in 2000. He's peeing on my fish cleaning bench. I'd just cleaned a couple of Northen Pike. Quess he thought I should give him some. One hell of a hunter though even if he's related to Jeff Mull. Glad to see the guns I sold have found some good homes. I'd like to see some pictures after they're all gone over. Was going out this morning to set some chukars for my pup, but we,ve got thunderstorms on the way again.
