| < 16ga. General Discussion ~ conundrum: sell y/n |

Gentlemen: I have something of a distressing situation - gun wise specifically that is.
My gun safe is very modest and over stuffed with working guns - the tools that put meat on the table.
Recently my Dad bought a Remy 11-87 that can handle 3.5" rounds...you know the gauge...anyway - my 1100 that I've had for 20 years is inhabited by a creature I call "Awn the Fritz" and does not want to play well.
It's not that I need space because I'll go get another safe - I'm like that - it's that the Remies won't really see much action from me in the future as long as I can find non-toxic shot for the vintage 16.
Dad is getting up in years and I'd hate to sell off something with him around for fear of insulting him - he bought the 3.5 "Big Black" as a sort of parting gift for me - I'm not sure he realizes the true treasure of the A-5 parked next to it...
So - to think "out loud" what's the best way to proceed?
A: use the Sears/Fulton 16 and shoot steel and possibly other harmful shot through it? a sort of "Fawk It Shoot It" philosophy...
B: Use the Remies for ducks and pick and choose the 16 duty
C: Get a modern 16 sxs for ducking - CZ/DeHaan type - that can handle steel - maybe drop some screw chokes in it for fun.
D: get some semi-vintage beater gun and FISI...
E: Have a beer, relax until the season and enjoy the time afield as best I can with both my Dad and the tool of choice... |

Best go with "E". Enjoy your Dad while he is here, pull out the guns every once and a while when he is around.
That is what I did. When Dad passed I sold what I did not want. My Dad had a thing for the 20 ga. I was into 12 ga.. Later wised up when I found the 16 ga., that will do everything the 12 will do and a 20 ga. can only hope for. |

Chill...and enjoy every day left to you and your dad to shoot together! In the overall scheme of life, who really cares what you shot on a particular day? Once those days together are gone...they are gone forever. You won't know how much it will hurt in 1000 little ways until they are gone.
Each day afield with your dad you are spending one of those "rare pieces of gold" and there are never enough of them in your bag. The same is true of days spent with your kids, nephews and neices, too.
Enjoy!! Party hard!!

I have to agree With Lefty & OSL. Spend the time with your dad and worry about the tool of choice later. Just spend as much time as you can with him.

Going through alot of the same issues with my Dad right now as well, but I have gotten him turned on to the 16's, but he's in love with the Turkish and Foreign guns right now. See French sxs thread as an example...
I have taken the option E approach. Kick back, drink your beers with your dad and enjoy the time you have with him rather than stressing about which gun for what. If he bought you the 3.5 11-87 and will enjoy watching you shoot it, then shoot it. Heck, that's more important than the # of ducks you may or may not hit with it.
Have fun and just enjoy the time.

I lost my dad on August 1st, 5 days ago. I still have the 16 ga. sxs he gave me when I was 12 years old 50+ years ago.
Enjoy your dad while he is still around. Life is fragile and sometimes too short.

Jim, sorry to hear about your Dad....time is the most precious thing we have, and time together is the most important time.
I still have my dad's first gun, which he handed down to me. It's horrid but I'll always cherish it.
Let me know when your going to bring your dads gun out to shoot and I'll bring mine and we will miss a couple of targets on thier behalf.
