The Versitile hunting dog thread got me to thinking.
How many of you guys hunt with Setters?
For a change of pace, let's see some pictures.
Here's my Setter Mickey, guarding the Parker.
Here he is giving you the evil eye.
Nose to nose with a butterfly.
Him and I with some Woodcock.

The only dogs I've ever owned are setters. That said, I don't have any computer images of them at the moment.
My current English, Gypsy, has been a great dog, very loving and accepting of my wife, after living alone with me the previous five years, and now our new son, who is nine months. She is only par as a bird dog, with a lackadaisical retrieve, but, a good nose.
My last dog was a Gordon. He had a dim view of strangers on the property, bit my ex girlfriend, and my brother, and never missed a chance to brawl with another dog. But, he was a hunting and retreiving machine, and I turned down many offers to sell him, and got invited to go hunting places that I otherwise wouldn't have. He found birds people didn't realize they had shot, and was an excellent bachlor's dog. My house never got broken into while he lived here. He came to work with me in the printing business most of his life, and had many human friends. His photo can be found in the summer of 1996 Double Gun Journal, with the article I wrote about Darne shotguns.
He died when he was 15. I miss him every day, but I miss him most this time of year.
My Irish setters were all clowns in a dog suit. Happy go lucky describes all of them to a T. One had a great nose, one was a rescue dog that had suffered a bout of distemper, and couldn't find a bowl of food with her nose. But, she was a great dog.
I love setters.
Best,
Ted |

Thanks for posting pics of your dog Dave. Beautiful.
As some may remember from a previous thread, I passed on a free setter. My brit is 10 going on 2, and I'm just not ready for another dog yet. I hope I don't have to wait until my brit is 15, but we'll see. My wife likes the brit temperament and size, but I'm more inclined towards the thoroughbred nature of the setter, and their classic looks as well. I also have a friend that breeds them, so I'll be set when the time is right. I've been able to hunt with several friends' setters, and they have been bird finding machines. |

Here's the other 3 parts of a fine day afield. It didn't end well for one of the participants, but the rest of us got a kick out of the way it turned out.
Teen-aged girls are the reason good setters go bad. |

My 10 year old, Petey, when life was really new to him. But he already held an appreciation for fine Prussian Daly's.
And now at 10, my co-pilot on many an outing.

Here's my brit contribution to the discussion:
I'm glad we're posting pics like this. It really helps me to remember what fantastic memories and great times afield I've had with my dog. Every day, week, month, year, is a gift.
Dogs are such a blessing. |

This is a friend's setter we hunted with last winter
The Setter is Jake and that's my 16ga lightning feather. The birds were nice enough to pose, too. |

Good looking bunch of pooches there guys.
Hey PGG, looks like you punched that guy in the eye.
He also looks very comfy in the truck and ready to go, anywhere. |

For years, the nephews thought I was a dog beater because their dad always told them I punched the dog when he peed in the house.!
He'll go anywhere, as long as he gets the front seat. Age and hip dysplasia have taken its toll on his hunting abilities, but he's still the greatest co-pilot. And he doesn't complain when I make a wrong turn. |
