I may bitch and moan at times but I have a bunch to be thankful for. Grade school was a very long time ago and sometimes I didn't pay attention, but does anyone know if the USA is the only country to celebrate giving thanks with a national holiday?

I'll be eating a Jaindl brand turkey this year cause I wasn't skillful enough to shoot the Eastern sub-species of our wild turkey. Wild tastes better.

Thanksgiving is totally an American holiday, and hopefully the politically correct cannot find a way to condemn it like several of our other holidays.

This is from Wikipedia:

1621 Thanksgiving, The Pilgrims in Massachusetts

The early settlers of Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts were particularly grateful to Squanto, the Native American and former British slave who taught them how to both catch eel and grow corn and also served as their native interpreter. Without Squanto's assistance, the settlers might not have survived in the New World.

The Plymouth settlers (who came to be called "Pilgrims") set apart a holiday immediately after their first harvest in 1621. They held an autumn celebration of food, feasting, and praising God. The Governor of Plymouth invited Grand Sachem Massasoit and the Wampanoag people to join them in the feast. Evidence to support that claim came from diaries of Plymouth. The settlers fed and entertained the Native Americans for three days, at which point some of the Native Americans went into the forest, killed 5 deer, and gave them to the Governor as a gift.

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow 16ers!

isn't it funny we've come from a country that was thankful for food - killed, butchered and prepared (which everyone was aware of) to a country where seemingly half have no idea that it was killed and butchered BEFORE being wrapped in celophane and presented so nicely in the meat section.. like a gift under the christmas tree. ohwheredidthiscomefrom? tasty treat!

praise the settlers and those who understand nowdays.. thanksgiving it is.

all the best to those who habit this forum,

cheers

ps. forgive any typo's

That was a nice little treatise about the Massachusetts Bay Colony giving thanks in 1621 and I'm sure they were better for it and I'm sure we are also.

But the folks in Richmond, VA claim that the REAL first Thanksgiving was celebrated at what is now Berkeley Plantation in 1620, a full year before the pilgrims got around to the feast.

I grew up in Michigan and now live in Maryland so I don't have a dog in this fight but I just thought I'd mention it. Laughing Razz Smile Laughing

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I plan to make a serious attempt to eat myself into a tryptophan induced coma.
