I just got involved with reloading 16ga. . I have a Mec 600 JR and when I weigh on my scale what the bushing charge is throwing it is always 1-2 10ths lower than the charge chart from MEC. I am using Universal, could this be because this is a course powder?

Gordon,

MEC bushings are notorius for throwing light. .1 or .2 in a shotgun load is not as critical as it is in a metallic load. As a matter of fact, if you are that close, you are doing very well!

I am using bushings TWO SIZES LARGER than listed to get the required powder amounts in my loads using Green Dot and Universal.

One thing that I have found that really effects powder thows is the humidity of the ambient air in the area you live. For the last 30 years, I have lived in the arid west and I usually end up with larger bushings to get the required powder weight. Friends who live in more humid areas of the country will get the required throw with a smaller bushing.

I found that all the bushings seem to throw a little light. I use a #26 bushing with universal. Chart says 19.7 grains, but it throws a consistant 19.4 to 19.5 grains. Thje recipe I'm using calls for 19.5, so it works out good for me.

If you ever use 800x powder, you will go 2 sizes smaller to be near your goal.
I've found out that most of the Mec bushings are light, better than being over.
