Hi all-
I've been enjoying my great grandfathers 16 gauge M11 for a couple years now shooting quail and pheasant and chukar, and I have finally gotten around to reloading so I don't feel as guilty at the trap range shooting 9 dollar a box shells. Anyway, I thought I'd start out with some good pheasant loads with some #5 shot, and I thought I'd run them past you guys before i try them so i don't blow something up.

Lead Shot 16 1 1/8 oz. Longshot Win. 209 Rem. SP16 25 8,300 PSI 1240
Lead Shot 16 1 1/8 oz. Longshot Win. 209 Rem. SP16 26.8 8,600 PSI 1295

I am using the one in the middle, my mec 600 is dropping about 1.7 ounces of #5 and between 26.2 and 27 grains of longshot with a #27 bushing. Hows that sound?

Looks like a nice load. I hate to give any advice on this type of question, but for what it's worth, my Rem 11 built in 1933 has been just fine with modern factory ammo like Fiocchi Golden Pheasants, Federal GameShok, etc. These are 1 1/8 oz loads in the 1295-1300+ velocity range and I'm sure they're pushing the pressure limits. I would think that your load would be a fine.

Where is your reloading data from?

I got it all off the hodgdons site. I am considering either joining the group on this site or buying the Lyman manual or both, but the hodgdons site has plenty of recipes to get me started.

I've never shot a Remington model 11, but I know those loads would kick like hell, in my SxS's. Laughing

That can't be right. 1.7 oz's of shot is about 700 grains. That would not even fit much less the pressure would be tremendous.. That has to be a misprint.

27 grs. Longshot is a lot of powder. You might consider backing off to 25grs. and you will probably still get great performance and less recoil. I shoot 23grs. Longshot in my 1 1/8oz. loads and they work great.

oops, not 1.7. 1.07 ounces. thats more like it. Yeah, 1.7 yould be insane. I have my rings set to heavy, and i have shot a lot of 1 1/8 federals and winchesters in the 1295 fps range, so i dont see why this load should be any different, but we'll see i guess.

You must be using federal paper basewad hulls then. 1.07oz is about a 1 1/16 oz load.

Way back when Remington loaded a 1 1/4 oz. mag. 16ga load. My Rem. 11 has handled them with ease. The old guns do well if the wood can stand the beating.

I've shot thousands of 1-1/8 and 1-1/4 oz lead and tungsten matrix field loads in my model 11's with no ill affects to the gun. The 1oz lead shot/Ballistic Products SPG16 wad/19.5-21 grains of Universal Clays I reload in almost any 2-3/4" 16 gauge hull and use on wobble skeet kicks somewhat less than the field loads and gives good results on clays and game.

The model 11 is an American built clone of the Browning A5 without the magazine cut off and an under rated gun. This is reflected by the fact that you can usually buy a model 11 for less than 1/2 the price of a Browning A5 in the same condition despite the fact that model 11's are more scarce. Model 11s don't have fancy engraving or a Price of Wales pistol grip but they are well made and point and kill birds as well as the Browning A5.

Shhhhh, lol, at least till I get my collection fleshed out. The pre 1911 does have the rounded "prince of wales" grip. Comparable quality IMHO to the Brownings. Got one of @ at the moment, 12, 16 and 20. Good shooters!

What I'm trying to do is build barrel sets for each. Just managed to get a 26" IC barrel for the 16ga to go with the 28" solid rib, marked full but opened up at some stage to a mod. Barrels in general for shotguns are at such a ridiculous premium that I'm looking for beaters with a barrel. Mix and match I know, but then I'm not one to care about pristine collectibility factors, I get 'em to shoot 'em! Don't want no polychoks (sic) though, lol.

The gun market I thought would be slowing down with the economy and after Christmas, but seems to be a lot of competition on the auction sites.
Good luck! They're out there, a C&R license certainly helps cut down on transfer fees. The Browning WWII Remington build are usually a lot cheaper than the full blown Belgium build Brownings. A nice 20ga went on GunBroker this week for $500 and change.
