The only gun I've ever owned has been a Remington 870 with 26" barrels. It does what I ask it to do, but I'm looking for something a little more purpose-built for grouse hunting here in Minnesota. The 870's dimensions have always felt fine, so I think a stock gun will work (I might be wrong; feel free to enlighten me).
With that background, here's what I think I'm looking for:
Gauge: 16 or 20
Style: SxS or O/U
Stock: Straight or Prince of Wales
Chokes: Screw-in would be great. Nothing tighter than Improved Cylinder/Modified.
Barrels: Nothing longer than 26".
Finish: The darker the wood the better.
Budget is probably $500-$800.
Right now I'm thinking about buying one of the TriStar Brittany models that Cabela's is offering for $800. Is there a better deal to be found?
Thanks,
Caleb |

Stoeger makes an inexpensive o/u & sxs that you can pick up for in a deluxe model for around $400 in 20ga or a standard model in 16/20 @ $350 In my opinion they seem to be built as well or better than a Tri Star and probably weigh less - I think the Tri Star is bulky. The Remington SPR 310 in o/u comes in both 20 & 16 and retails under $600. The 16 I have been shooting the last couple of years has done me good job althougth the wood is a little soft. Weight is around 8lbs. I just picked up a Browning White Lighting 26" 16ga that wieghs in @ under 7 lbs for $1380 new |

O/U 16 ga, double for sale. Barrel reads "Chrome Molybdenum Compressed Steel....NECKERMANN", Receiver is engraved (lightly) satin-finished silver. Weight is 6 pounds. Don't know chokes; there is "17.0" on each barrel near breech. 2 triggers; extractors. Buttstock and forestock are checkered. Forestock has lever for detaching from barrels. Barrel blue = at least 97%. Buttstock has pistol grip. NO cracks in wood anywhere. Distance from front trigger to back of buttplate is 14". I bought this (used) in Germany about 1.5 years ago, and have not shot it. E-mail for pics.....(not taken pics of this shotgun yet.....can do tomorrow). Price is 350. shipped.
Only caveat is a dent in the rear-most bridge of the vent rib.

I visited Cabela's this evening and looked at the Tri Star Brittany. I wasn't that impressed. The fit of the wood to metal was sloppy, although the action felt solid. It didn't seem that much nicer than the Stoeger.
