Does anybody have a recipe that shoots well using Blue Dot and a 1 oz load? Laughing

I do not, but I do have the World's Best 1 1/8 ounce load using it.

Alliant lists one load but it uses the Winchester Compression Formed AA hull with a Remington SP16 wad and 29 grains of powder yielding 1275 fps at approximately 9,300 psi.

I use blue dot sometimes, I would have to check my data, but I think the data I used was from BPI and I am a little suspect of their data right now.

I will check here shortly and post again.

I liked blue dot for the velocity!

I found my Blue Dot load but I haven't chased down where I got it.
(just have it in my "blue dot file"

Fiocchi or Cheddite hull, 1 oz shot, (both hulls with their own primers)
SG 16 wad, 30gr Blue Dot @ 1350 32grs BlueDot @1400. I don't have pressure listed, so I am guessing below 10,000 or I probably wouldn't have used it.

If I chase it down, can give you who published the load.

If you have the updated LPG spread sheet, check it, the load above might be on it. I would have checked myself but just thought of it.

I have a lot of loads for blue dot. Blue dot is not for 1 oz loads. It is one of the slowest of shotgun powders. For a 1 oz load pick another powder.

SP310 is correct here. Blue Dot burns too slowly to be suitable for 1 ounce loads in the 16. There is not enough resistance to allow it reach a suitable peak pressure to burn efficiently or cleanly. Your velocities will probably be inconsistant, and there will be lot of unburned junk left over in the bore. Unique and Herco are two good powders for 1 ounce loads. Other powders with similar burn rates will also wiork well.

However, Blue Dot will work well in the same hull for fast 1-1/8 ounce loads. The SP16 wad would probably be a slightly better choice, but the WW16AA wad could be suitable as well.

You can also use Blue Dot for 1-1/4 ounce loads if you wish. It works very well for me in this capacity in a Federal or a Cheddite hull. The SP16 wad will work here. The WW16AA wad has enough shot cup capacity, but might be too long over all. You could shorten it by removing the middle and placing 16 ga solid card wads between the cup and the base to get a proper column length and good crimps. Doing so will not affect pressures or velocities to any great degree--just the column length inside the shell.

I don't have my older Hercules/Alliant reloading guides on hand, but the ones I have at home list several good recipes for Blue Dot and a number of componants. You could inquire of Alliant. They will have the data you seek in their archives.

Affectionally known to some of us as "Dolph", it is in the low pressure list, with a side note signifying it as "Scott's pheasant slayer load."
