OK,

I shot the new Downrange 16 Gauge Wad this morning.

A 7/8 oz load with Universal powder, was fantastic. It functioned my 16 ga 1100 perfectly. All good loads in the Winchester polyformed hull. It made me really happy.

I am going to try the same load in the Cheddite hull.

A 3/4oz. load with Clays worked OK in my Model 37 but, they wouldn't even try to function the 1100. The clays did break pretty nice with these loads though in the model 37. I am just not as comfortable with this gun as the 1100.

looking forward to the results in the cheddite hull, especially with Universal. How well did the 3/4 oz loads crimp? Were they dished in?

No, the crimps were fine with 3/4 oz. loads

You need to be sure NOT to crush the wad when reloading, let the crimp apply the wad pressure, not the reloader.

I had to back off the plunger adjustment about 1 turn, or so. the crimps were nice and flat with no filler or overshot wads.

I wish getting pictures on this site was easier, so I could show you how nice they crimped.

The first picture is a Federal, Winchester Polyformed and Cheddite 7/8oz. shot charge and Universal powder.

The second picture is of 5 new Cheddite hulls with a 3/4 oz shot charge and Clays powder the single shell is a once fired with the same load.

The third is more of a side view of the first pic to show crimp depth.

The fourth is a cutaway to show how much this wad will crush, by letting the crimp do the work. No wad pressure is used when reloading.

The fifth is showing Remington black and green and a Winchester Compression Formed with a 3/4 oz. shot charge and Clays powder.

No fillers of any kind, in any load. The adjustments on the reloader were not changed to reload any of these hulls. I am just trying to show how user friendly this wad is. Sorry but I don't have any Fiocchi hulls in 2 3/4".

Looks like 11/16, and mabye even 5/8 may be do-able with RGL's Very Happy

I've occasionally loaded 5/8 ounce loads of #8 for stocked quail, woodcock, and even snipe over a dog. They are terrific and don't tear the birds up. They are also way too much fun for skeet. The kids just love them. These little poppers are far more effective than a .410 round. This new wad ought to be perfect.

I have a feeling that the 5/8 and 11/16 oz loads will need a filler wad, maybe an overshot card will do, although I hate overshot cards, and filler wads in general.

The 7/8oz loads are fine, but the adjustments on the 3/4 oz. loads were touchy, i.e. you need to be careful on the crimp depth, at least on a MEC reloader. (I set the reloader up for the 3/4oz. loads and reloaded all loads on those settings.)

This wad being as long as it is in the compression section, is more easily compressed than the wads we are used to working with. That is the reason you can't use wad pressure when seating them. If you break the legs the crimp will dish on the 3/4 oz. loads. I am sure it doesn't matter on the Winchester Compression Formed or Remington hulls, but on the roomy hulls you are asking for trouble.

Now we just need these wads by the case so we can do some real testing and shooting!!!!!

You folks are finding out the uses real well , the RGL will load the 5/8 OZ with out a hitch , the lowest you can go with the larger hulls is 11/16 OZ
