The very best ones for paper hulls are the old Bridgeport Gun Implement (BGI) antique hand crank roll crimpers you find on e-bay.

With paper you don't need the drill press operated crimpers in fact you get better results with the hand operated ones because you have a better "feel" and control of what is going on.

Twice Barrel has it correct. I believe you will find that the drill press roll crimper will have the tendency to tear the paper hull. Get yourself the hand crank model.

That's a bunch of garbage. I've roll crimped 1000's of paper hulls. And the thinner Cheddite hulls at that. All with the drill press and a Lyman roll crimp tool. I get perfect crimps. Never ripped, tore, or even ruined a paper hull.
Nothing wrong with the hand crank, as I have a couple of them, but the drill press is faster.

Dave,

You are correct because you have used the only good roll crimper made, the Lyman, try to use a BPI and let me know how you do. The Lyman is hardened and very smooth. The roll crimpers made now, especially the ones that just have the pins in them, tend to ruin the paper hulls. I am sure if you played with it long enough that the newer roll crimpers might work, but the hand models work better.

I haven't used the drill press kind yet, but I do have a vintage hand crank model, with the little plunger that forces the shell out when you're done, and it's awesome. I got it on e-bay for about $30. That said, shells will tend to spin unless you hold them tight, as opposed to putting them in a shell vise and using a drill press.

Both have their advantages/disadvantages I suppose. I do like using a vintage crimper though. It just goes with the whole roll crimping thing like pointing dogs and 16gauges.

Hello All

Here is the tool that I use most.

It is a Lyman crimper.

I have also made an insert for the post of my drill press to add an intermediate pully to slow the drill speed WAY DOWN for use in drill press driven roll crimping

Yes, it was built on the excentric so as to be able to tighten both belts needed.

Enjoy the day
Mike

Holy crap, that's quite the roll crimping machine! All that's missing is a reduction gear hydraulically-actuated butterfly valve decompression switch, and a self-regulating cam adjusting knob with a rheostat dohickey. Razz Very Happy

Skeettx--I have the same contraption but mine has a 12ga. head. Sad I don't supose you'd know where a 16ga. head is?

Hello Woodcock,

If you look VERY , VERY carefully, you will see that the 12 head will unscrew

and a Lyman 16 gauge head will screw on.

And that the pusher end will suit many different gauges.

Let us know if you find that to be so on your tool.

Enjoy the day
Mike

Here's a thought, how is the Lyman head/tool held in place in your crimper machine? 1/4" shaft and set scew? If the shaft diameter of a Prescision Reloading roll crimp toll is the same couldn't you get a PR tool and use in place of the Lyman tool in this machine? Mike
