Current CCI shotshell primers are made at Federal these days in Anoka, Minnesota. Several of these bigger companies are "monopolized" these days... Ol' Teddy Roosevelt is probably rolling over in his grave!
Back on subject though, I agree with your accessment you quoted above 16GG. It has been my findings as well... I also get velocity increases when ball (spherical) type powders are used; more than WW209, Fiocchi 616 or Remington. I agree no magnum, just higher on the primer chart these days than before. I think a new chart needs to be compiled because the CCI 209 no longer rests on the bottom of the list for strength IMHO.
I had a long talk with CCI in Lewiston (Idaho) when I got my first case home and recognized "Federal" all over the primers from battery cup to round primer cups, even to Federal's style of packaging!
One interesting comment exchange I had with the CCI specialist:
"Federal had a hard time duplicating our primer mix's performance" Started from CCI.
"Did they?" I curtly returned...
"Well.... They said they did."

To go a bit further, with the CCI stuff, the CCI209M is also a bit different than it used to be. It shows up when you get to the slower powders like Blue Dot, Steel & Longshot. The CCI209M starts acting a bit more like a Fed209A than the original CCI209M.
It really is too bad, I liked the original versions of the CCI primers. They are still OK but the originals gave you another avenue to explore when other primer/powder combinations didn't fill the bill.
BTW, these are not recent changes, all this stuff happened 8 - 10 years ago. |

I liked the original version as well dc..... For yet another reason. The battery cup sealed good (better) in Federal paper base wad hulls and eliminated a good bit of gas leakage which is common in these hulls....
Hummm? I don't think this (gas leakage) has came up yet?

| I loaded a batch of RGL's with the new CCI primers had all kinds of gas leaking by and sticking to the breech face. The Win 209 has alot less for me in the RGL. |

Good reading regarding the primers!
Let's try to keep "common" components in mind. I have a hard time finding certain primers in my area, ... mostly tough to find Fiocchi and Cheddite, but we have everything else. I use Win 209's the most but I have and use Feds and Remingtons on occasion.
I'm looking forward to shooting 3/4oz loads as much as possible this summer and really getting "on" with my light SxS. Having this new wad really opens up some nice light load possibilities. |

bcpifish, I'm going to sound like a broken record around here, but I think all of these loads will need testing. The only loads I use have been tested and I get the heebie-jeebies when I wander into the unknown when reloading. Get a bag of wads from Precision and send in your load for a look-see.

If you're wondering if it's a good candidate for testing, I have nothing to with which to reference your load off the top of my head, but I would be concerned with possibly a fair amount of unburned powder. Load one up and put it through a strong, modern gun and see if you get much unburned powder. I've had powder burn issues with Unique and light loads.
Might want to hold the gun on the other side of a tree when you touch it off.

| The highest listed 7/8oz loads with unique I can find uses17.5 grains of Unique. I think 20 grains is pushing it. As Dave said, probably a lot of unburned powder. |
