What do I need to know about FFL's when selling a shotgun on line. Do I need to go to an FFL holder to ship? What about the buyer?

Mark,
Locally here in Montana my FFL will accept any gun from an individual out of state and do the paper work to transfere it to me. The folks I have purchased from have needed a signed copy of the FFL to show the shiping agent (FEDEX,UPS,orUSPS) before they will ship a gun to the FFL holder. On the doublegun board people in some cases feel they must go thru an FFL to ship the firearm. They also pay dearly by value. My FFL ships for me and only charges the normal fees of UPS and it isnot thru his books. The FFL on the other end has accepted the gun and done the required paper work. Living in Montana does have it's advantages.
Best,
Ron

Thanks, I haven't ever sold or bought a gun on-line. Thanks for the information. Much appreciated.

Yes, you can mail guns via the U.S. Mail as long as they are being sent to an FFL holder or Gunsmith. The only provision is that ammunition cannot be shipped with the gun. This info provided by my local Post Master. He ships guns for me all the time as long as it is going to an FFL holder.

11.3 Rifles and Shotguns

Although unloaded rifles and shotguns not precluded by 11.1.1e and 11.1.2 are mailable, mailers must comply with the Gun Control Act of 1968, Public Law 90-618, 18 USC 921, et seq., and the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder, 27 CFR 178, as well as state and local laws. The mailer may be required by the USPS to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the gun is unloaded and not precluded by 11.1.1e.

11.1.1e. Prohibits mailing shotguns with barrels less than 18 inches.

11.1.2. Covers the rules for mailing handguns. Which can only be mailed by manufacturers and FFL holders utilizing form 1508

A rifle or shotgun can be shipped through the USPS as long as it is going to a licensed FFL holder. You cannot ship handguns through the USPS.
Going through UPS you can ship a firearm as long as it is going to a licensed FFL holder. You do not have to ship from a holder of an FFL. You have to supply the receiving FFL holders license to the shipper.
