Gentlemen: I am mailing my deposit in the morning. I think I will drive up from South Texas. I may be interested in continuing to hunt after the 14th, but have no definite plans. I am looking forward to meeting all of you. T.J. |

Update time: We've got 4 deposits in-me, 3Doc, tjwalker, and now Brad6260 (who's going to N. Central KS after Montezuma for a few days)
Thudddd and Beau the super slab CLAIM to be coming but it might depend on how many cocaine filled condoms he can stuff in his behind for the trip back from Panama TJC has a conflict with opening day in NJ.
Have several more lurkers, one of which shoots a 16g. M-21 2 brl set Pressure is on him a bit since the guy with the nicest 16 gets to buy the booze. Right now we've got 2 Sterlys, a Merkel, tj might bring his DeHaan, and no telling what Brad will show up with.
PM or call me 623-825-5353 if I can answer any questions (or pick up a gun for somebody at Michael Murphy's near Wichita or Cabelas in KC or Mitchell ) |

Tj,
We welcome anything you care to show up with.
Anyway we just lay claim to owning some nice guns we never said we new how to use em!
I can see it now. The bunch of us up to our knees cleaning cock birds in Montezuma all shot by some guy's punk 14 year old with a 20 gauge H&R topper he picked up at Wally World the day before.
Cheers,
Brad |

From the PGCA Forum:
I was out by Dodge City and while driving through the wheat fields out to the cabin by a bend in the creek, saw quite a few long tailed birds snaking off from the gravel road into the wheat. The winter wheat harvest has already started, we had a good spring with sufficient moisture, so the pheasant count should be high. Lots of doves also, and the dove season opens three months from today. Walked up the hill in the evening cool to the prairie dog town and listened to the coyote chorus.
I SO which it were Nov. |

OK you 'lurkers' out there-time to make a decision. Colorado Paul is in so we have 5 deposits: Paul, 3Doc, tjwalker, Brad6260 and me. Only 3 more spots. Feel free to call if I can answer any questions 623-825-5353. Drew |

Kansas bird report per TwiceBarrel who added that NW KS is terribly dry and things don't look good around Goodland. Last week there were some big storms in NE KS.
"All my information is second hand but indications are that we had pretty good carry over from last year so breeding numbers are up. I don't think the West and the South West will have much improvement they are still suffering from a pretty serious draught. I think the Central area will be good from Wichita north to the State Line. I just came through Concordia and Bellville two weeks ago and the cover looks very good. I came through Washington on my way back from Nebraska this morning and the cover has not looked this good for several years. I haven't heard many reports of wide spread hail and the storms haven't been severe here in the North Central part of the State. I think the Eastern part of the State will be about normal with pockets of excellent hunting." |

Another bird report:
"I do know that the spring wheat harvest seems to be a good predictor of fall birds and this year's harvest was below expectation across most of the state. I don't hunt the far western portions much and it appears that they are still locked in more drought than the rest of the state. That said, there are pockets where the weather was kind and wheat production was pretty good. Relatives in N-C Kansas got over 60 bushels/acre (that's good), so I'm hoping for a reasonable season if I can find the right fields. Last year was very good for pheasants and quail where I hunted." |

Doc,
That report is for 06/22/05. Look for the new report about mid September. |

Here's a website about the Cimarron: http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/psicc/cim/
I spoke with the Forest Service office:620-697-4621. They predicted good bird holdover because much of the season last year was so warm and dry there was a low harvest. It was a very dry spring, and still well behind in moisture, but the area has had some rain this month. Bobwhite along the (dry) river bottom should OK and the person I spoke with has seen lots of pheasant along roadways in the next county. I was able to order a map of the Cimarron National Grasslands from the Forest Service (719-635-7506) and they'll be mailing some more infro.
I also have a call into the county wildlife biologist. |
