I found a Mossberg Model 190 16 gauge bolt action in the back of my father-in-law's gun safe with about an inch of dust on it. I cleaned it up and then took it to the trap range. I shot very well with it. So I took it home and gave a real complete cleaning and oiled the stock with wood safe Ballistol and it is now looking like someone cares about it.
Anyone have one of these? I am not sure how to remove the bolt nor do I know if it is possible.
I want to keep this gun looking good because it shoots very well and enlightened me to how awesome the 16 gauge shotshell is with all of the benefits that go with it. Any info you can provide will be appreciated. |

Bolt-action...easy to work the action from a truck cab.
Hint: Never turn off the engine. |

Here's my 190 on the left. The JC Higgins on the right feeds a lot better though. |

Nice collection. Is it possible to remove the bolt on the Mossberg for cleaning from the breach end? |

Open the bolt, hold the trigger back, and the bolt will slide out. When you reinsert the bolt, hold the trigger back again. |

I am with Dave; no SxS option - no vote. |

When I lived up in the Blue Ridge in VA, just about every squirrel hunter I ran into was toting a Mossberg bolt action shot gun of one gauge or another. Lots of 16 gauge models mixed in with the 12s and 20s. The price was usually right for a good used one at Vass-Kapp Hardware and Gun Enporium in Galax. Bolt guns are reliable too if a bit slow for fast follow up shots. But then, those mountain boys usually didn't miss on the first shot, so speed was rarely an issue.
These bolt guns are a good choice for a slug gun too. I've seen a few with rifled barrels. Don't know if they were factory or customized guns though. I suspect it would not be real hard for a gunsmith or a clever DIY guy to swap out the the smooth bore barrel for a rifled one. |

Well SxS guns are basically an O/U turned on it's side, so maybe you can sneak a vote in there. |

Sounds similar to those guys that hold their handguns on their side. |

Okay... rookie mistake not including the sxs... oops. This was the first poll I put together. Live and learn. Post your vote and I'll add them up and recalculate the percentages
Thanks DanLee for the info on bolt removal. Worked like a charm with no fuss. Now I can clean the rest of the gunk off of the bolt to make this old timer run like a Swiss watch.
I'd post pics of the Mossberg 190 and my new BPS Upland 16 gauge, but I haven't quite figured out how to load photos yet. |
