For setting up the gun generally what ammo can I shoot in soft recoil and what
recoil requires the "hard" set up?
Thank you |

Well the first thing is to set it up as heavy loads and see if it cycles. If it doesn't the set for light loads. The heavy load setting gives one the most recoil reduction. |

Assuming its a 16 gauge, generally speaking you can shoot 1 oz target loads at the light setting and 1 1/8oz hunting loads and heavier at the heavy setting. But that is not set in stone. My Sweet 16 will handle the 1 oz loads at the heavy setting. lubrication is the variable. Trial and error will tell you how much to use. Just a light trace of oil on the magazine tube is all that should be necessary. Don't over lubricate. That could lead to excessive recoil. Also make sure the forearm tab at the rear portion is in the slot in the receiver and the locking nut is tight. Good finger tight is enough. Forearm cracking is an issue and loose forearms are thought to contribute. |

Veryoldman, first welcome to the site, glad to have you here. I damn sure am not an expert in A5's, but my Dad shot one for around thirty years. We hunted almost only pheasants, and he never changed a thing in the gun.
It ran everything he ran in it, no clays, etc, just hunting. Maybe if you are going to hunt only doves, quail, woodcock, etc you might have to change the rings, other than that, my advice is shoot her, with different loads and see what happens.
Another very old man.

At a youthful and spritely 65+ years, I would note that the condition of the springs in an Auto 5 can affect felt recoil to a great degree.
With new springs, fit and try re shell and lube will tell the truest story.
Enjoy the shuffle and the slam....it is hard to best. |

Replace all springs and add in new friction pieces, clean adn smooth the OD of mag tube, then lube with one drop of MOBIL 1 Synthetic oil and put new friction pieces in place and cycle the barrel with piece and spring inplace, then shot some round, keed the piece in than give proper cycling when firing.
If you have clean the bolt carrier, etc., dust with graphite powder to keep the everything running smoothly. |
