For everyone who hunts the Oklahoma panhandle like I love to do. Almost 150 days with no moisture! Yikes |

With the eye worms, intestinal parisites, and lack of water its going to be a lean year in the panhandle quail hunting next year. They were really trailing off bad toward the end of the season this year.
Got a couple of places over east of wichita falls that have at least gotten some rain and didnt have eyeworms, at least that i found anyway, butits not much land and i dont shoot the woild birds. I alosd quit early in the afternoon so they get roosted up unmolested.
My GSPs are bored and constantly under foot. Hardest part of the year. Dogs in great shape and ready to run, high temperature and ratlesnakes make running them an issue. |

Here is our resident bobwhite covey in our yard feeding after a recent ice storm. This covey goes into the fall with about 20 birds and come springtime is down to 10 to 12 birds. They've been hanging on for the 15 years I've lived here, surviving, but not thriving. All our local bird hunting is on preserves with bobwhite, chukar and pheasant available. It is a sad state of affairs here in the Ozarks where we used to be THE destination for bird hunters back in the '60's and '70's. I have to travel a minimum of two hours for any wild birds at all, but the majority of my wild bird hunting is done during my fall western bird hunts. I sure hope y'all don't end up in the same situation.

I wintered in the Arizona desert, east of Parker on BLM ground this year, saw lots of quail over a 2 1/2 month period.....Had a good number here in NW Kansas last year as well. I don't shoot them here, keep hoping for more. If I am still walking, we are planning a quail safari to Oklahoma and Texas in the fall...stay well all.. |

Here’s one of my yardbirds in southwest Missouri from a few months ago. They’re off limits with a shotgun, but my shorthairs get done practice in them. Last Sunday had the front door open and watched 8 of them running in and out if the blackberry brambles to steal some fallen seed from the bird feeder.

Chicago,
Spirt Grouse are for puppy training only, we never shoot them. The pups point them all the time here on our land, even under the picnic tales near the old Rock fire pit.

Heston our male Ryman Setter pointing that Grouse at 12 weeks old, just off the front porch of the log cabin, in Potter/Tioga.
We call it God's Country cause it is!
