Rio's?
They are on sale often. Not as good a shell, IMHO, as the Herter-Cheds.
Win's are never on sale, but the next in line in this area, for cost.
I guess start loading the emptys that are piling up. I don't forsee a component shortage....
Unless we all go bizerk |

Granted, even though I'm a pretty low volume consumer, I will miss the affordability of Herters. Luckily the PW375 is tuned up and good to go along with....
+/- 325 empty Herters & Win cheddite hulls
+/- 300 empty RGL
1000 new primed Fiocci
And all the incidentals that are needed to go w/ those hulls.
Less TV; more reloading and wood working; a plan that's good for the soul and the wallet.
cheers

Of the various 16-gauge ammunition currently available, I prefer Federals over all others. I have bought a lot of Herter's shells, but mainly for the low price. |

I have found Federals to be extremely dirty. I much prefer the Herter's, regardless of price. The Federals do seem to have good construction, but the powder is awful. I can shoot one round and have my barrel be filled with big chunks of unburned powder from end to end. |

Most of my reloads are Unique, so Fed's seem quite clean in comparison. |

I'm going to buy a box of Federal 1 1/8oz high brass loads and try them out for long range shooting. If they work ok, I'll buy a flat. Otherwise, I'm leaning towards getting a flat of Fiocchi Golden Pheasants. For short range work, just about anything will do.
p.s. - my only complaint about GP's is that they're not purple.

Back to reloading. Have several cases of DR-16's and enough empty hulls to start a war.. Just need to find a new powder for my low pressure loads. Just about out of Solo 1250.

If you're going to play the 16 gauge game long term you need to scarf up all the hulls you can when opportunities arise. Plus stock up on any useful wads because like the Herter's loads they can be here today, gone tomorrow. I'll never run out of either hulls or wads. Then spread out your target shooting a little with a 12 and/or 20 gauge. |

Federal makes a Pheasants Forever tagged shell that pushes 1-1/8 oz at 1425 fps, your choice of No. 4, 5, or 6 shot. I shoot mine through an 1100. Dunno about pheasants, but it is hell on squirrels. |

Danlee, I’m sure that is a real killer hunting load but hard on both the wallet and shoulder for casual and clay shooting. Too hot for high volume in older guns too. |

For upland game and registered shoots (i.e., when it matters): Rem, Win, Fed, Fio, RST, Polywad. Open up that wallet and spend some of those hard earned dollars, folks!
For waterfowl: Kent, roll-crimped ITX
For informal trap & skeet, clays practice: Reload Cheddite hulls until they fall apart. |

You can buy Aguila 1oz #8 for $72 a flat.
Also Remington GL 1oz #8 for $72 a flat.
Probably have to click around a bit to find free or low shipping.
I finally went out to garage and moved my 16ga ammo around into one stack... turns out I've bought 8 flats of Herters 1oz #8! Plus 2 flats of 1-1/8oz #6. So I'm in pretty good shape I'd say
I do shoot it for skeet, so can go through 4 boxes in a day though. |

I used Federal Pheasants Forever #5 on a pheasant hunt in ND last fall. Worked great. Several long range shots....no cripples. Birds went down. They are not cheap but...they work.

I have a pretty big inventory of Herters loads and some others and I have a MEC Sizemaster. |
