Robert Churchill used a method of patterning a gun where the adjustments were easily calculated and not prone to the errors you could encounter using a try gun where differences in stock shape may skew the results. Thicker or thinner combs such as you find on subgauge guns will dramatically influence the patterning and using a try gun doesn't work as well as using the gun you are actually working on. Basically, a patterning board or sheet (like I use) is positioned 16 yards away from the muzzle of the gun. The gun is mounted with no attempt made to fit yourself to the gun. I will practice mount the gun many times before I ever fire the gun. When the mount seems natural and not forced, complete the mount to your patterning sheet center point without rushing or snapping the gun up and fire a shot when the front bead intercepts your aim point. I like to use tight chokes and fire at least 4 shots, repeating the procedures above.
Once you have the patterning target done, find and mark the center of the densest part of your shot pattern. Measure over horizontally to the center and that is your cast. If the pattern is off vertically, that is your drop correction. Firing from 16 yards, with your eye about 1 yard behind the front bead, every one inch on the target is equal to 1/16" correction on the stock. In the case of my DEA, the pattern was 6" left which equals 6/16" or 3/8" and must be moved in the direction you want to move the pattern. So on my gun, I needed 3/8" additional cast off. I like my hunting guns to shoot a 60/40 pattern and have learned that 2 1/4" DAH will be real close to that, so generally bending in a little cast off is all I require. |
