It’s my understanding that older 16 ga model Remington 870s are lighter than the more recent production. Is that correct?
If so, when did the lighter version cease being made?
Thanks. |

The older models ceased in the mid to late 1970's. |

My girlfriend's dad gave her his 16 gauge 870 that he bought at the PX when he was stationed in Texas in '66, although originally he said '64 so it could be either, I don't know what the dates of manufacture are.
It was his only shotgun, and he used it for ducks, pheasants, grouse, and deer. He killed a lot of bucks with 4 buck out of it, 28" barrels and full choke.
He said his biggest mistake was not buying one in 12, 20, 28, and 410 also, he loves this gun.
It doesn't feel heavy, I'll put in on my scale and report back. |

1980 was the last year that the 870 was made in 16ga. I have multiple pre 1980 870 16s, and they definitely are much lighter than the modern versions, which have very heavy barrels. Even on the older versions, it can make a bit of a difference whether you are using a plain, or a vent rib barrel, with the vent rib being heavier. |

Dunno 870, but in general older guns had thinner barrels. Later guns have thicker barrels to allow for choke tubes.
Anybody got a date estimate 870, 16 ga, 414,xxx ? Barrel date code has 3 digits, so the decoder is not good. |

16gaDavis,
28" plain barrel, modified choke.
The gun was probably a bit lighter than in it's current configuration. Some one changed the corn cob forend to a full forend. I added a Kick-eez pad. |

Ding, ding, ding we have a winner! One can even look at the magnum (3" chamber) 12 gauges from the 60's to see the difference in barrels and over all weight from anything manufactured after the late 80's when non-toxic shot was mandated. |

There were some double letter year designations, 1950-1953, but otherwise there are markings with an additional letter on numerous Remington products that have been deciphered elsewhere. Take the two possible combinations of your markings and see which makes sense---one might not even be a workable combination, but if both are then which would make sense as being correct for your gun based on its construction against what they looked like in the two periods? |
