I’m looking for a Nickel Steel Winchester Model 12 in 16 bore. Needs to be post 1928ish, therefore being 2.75 inch chamber. Needs to be functional, no cracks in stock etc. PM with details. |

Well, I have a Model 12 (1952), so that makes me an expert, right? No, I am far from an expert, but the info I have at hand suggest that nickle steel barrels were used from 1912 until around 1930, when Winchester Proof Steel was put on the market. Given that the change from 2 9/16th chambers to 2 and 3/4 occurred about the same time, you have narrowed the search considerably.
Hopefully, someone who knows a lot more than I do about the specifics of Model 12s will prove me wrong, thus broadening the number of guns that would have both of these characteristics (nickel steel and 2.75 chambers). Good luck with your search. |

I do believe you are correct. I would consider an early 30’s prior to the thickened butt stock, after I have exhausted my search for a nickel steel. |

Almost, but I do not believe this gun to be 2 3/4. If my research is correct the switch began around 1928. Unless stamped 2 3/4 on the barrel, it is likely 2 9/16. Beautiful gun, though. I’m curious who completes the restoration. |

Many of the old 16 gauge Nickel Steel Model 12s have been converted to 2 3/4" chambers over the past 60 years or so. One of those would be easier to find than an actual Nickel Steel 16ga originally chambered for the longer shells. I had a gunsmith convert my 1919-era Model 1912 to 2 3/4" about 25 years ago and it works fine. But I realize this would affect any collector value the gun might have.
Here is an old discussion on this subject: http://www.16ga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20388&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=winchester |

Can I ask.....why not a 2 9/16" chamber? I have a Model 12 made in 1916 with the short chamber. I feed it 2 1/2" reloads with no issue. No issue reloading the shells either. You can either setup a MEC single stage for 2 1/2" or roll crimp.
I believe that you can find new factory ammo through RST if you don't reload. |

This would be my dedicated duck gun, and I would be shooting bismuth. I don’t mind shooting short RST small game loads, but their bismuth is over $60 a box when I last checked. I have just started reloading and have not ventured into non-tox loads quite yet. Still trying to learn the basics. |

I have a '29, and it's 2 3/4 and Winchester proof steel. It also had the perch belly buttstock, which I swapped for a post-war buttstock that fit me better. |

Hoping I can come across something a little more presentable. The added choke doesn’t do much for me either. I’ve searched high and low on the gun auction sites Nothing worth having or they are listed at ridiculous prices. Thank you, though. |
