Also checked off a bucket list item by taking a deer with a revolver and open sights.
Used a Colt .357 trooper inherited from my uncle.

Marty is one tough customer. Literally 15 minutes before Marty pointed these 2 roosters, I was pulling porcupine quills out of his muzzle and mouth. At the time of the picture he still had a 1/2 dozen quills in his mouth that our Vet had to remove.

I filled a doe tag up in the Ruby Mountains in 1989 while stationed at NAS Fallon. The snow was deep back then too. After climbing up and shooting the deer, on the drag back to my truck, my biggest concern was the deer running over me as it slid over the crusty snow. Easiest deer drag I ever had. |

Got the call Thursday to guide a preserve hunt. Old girl was steady as a rock today, and no birded when needed. Brought back two cripples that were lightly hit from the woods. 20 birds and none were lost from the dog or handlers side. They got 15 in the bag.
Greta has earned her kibble this day. |

My young setter Nigel had five finds yesterday (two of which I was able to shoot over) while chukar/hun hunting, which is great progress for a young dog. Great to see the light switch turn on. It was a glorious day to be afield.

UncleDanFan,
Great stuff glad to see you and the pup are becoming companion hunters. Nice Chukar hunting for a young dog.
Merry Christmas and be careful in the mountains!
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Thanks. It's huge country, and he runs huge for the first hour, 5-800 yds generally, and I try to rein him in, then he calms down and hunts for me/with me after he has burned off some energy. He's learning. Shooting birds with him is a great reward, and you can see him get excited and want to hunt with me after that happens. Fun to watch him grow into a bird dog. |
