Has anyone had their RBL 16 threaded for choke tubes? If so, who would you recomend and how did it turn out?

Thanks
Brad

Briley can do the job...but it won't be cheap ($550 +shipping).

My RBL16 barrels were too thin for even Briley to tube. It appears that Briley needs at least .030 wall thickness after the choke is removed to thread the barrels.

Why do you need choke tubes?

I am surprised to hear that Briley would not install choke tubes in your RBL. When I spoke to them regarding thinwall steel compatible tubes in my SKB (which they installed) they told me they could install choke tubes in "älmost anything" including eccentric tubes to change point of impact. I also believe someone on this web site mentioned having CSMC send their newly manufactured RBL barrels straight from the factory to Briley for tubes installation something I don't think CSMC would do unless Briley thought it was possible. Your statement means that either RBLs are not choke compatible at all or that CSMC needs to be told you want choke tubes prior to manufacture of the gun so they can leave enough steel for tube installation. It would be unusual for Briley to decline to install tubes in a modern shotgun.

Thanks for the replys. Mike, I recieved the gun as a gift from the wife (really nice gift). She had it choked LT Mod and Mod because I mostly dove hunt. For that it is great, but I really like to shoot it, and it is a little tight for skeet or maze clays. Thats my excuse anyway.

Thanks
Brad

Do you reload for the 16 ga? If you do you can make 7/8 oz spreder loads that will work great for skeet and save $500.

GEEZ! just learn to shoot it! Every RBL that comes through our place has to Have SOMETHING done to it. Rechecker, reblue , reengrave, rechoke, refinish...etc. They arent a bad gun, but I can't figger why anyone would spend that kind of money for one.Gotta be a status thing....Anyhow, just learn to shoot it..........

I was surprised too as Briley's website states that they can install tubes in about 98% of all barrels. It cost me about $60 in shipping and insurance both ways to find out mine was in the unlucky 2%. The barrel wall thickness of my barrels after choke removal would have been on the order of .020 and the guy I talked to at Briley indicated he needed about .010 more.

That is true, I was shooting crows with a fellow that had choke tubes installed in his shotgun. The barrel actually developed a "bubble" in it, right at the point where the choke tube seats in the barrel. Luckily he noticed it before it had a major failure. But the barrel was a loss.

Briley had done the install of their thin wall tubes. This was back in '94 or '95. I was able to get the choke out, which surprised me. When we measured the wall it was .027 on the thick side and .018 where it bubbled. The measurement was taken before the threaded portion.
